Today's Did you know, Screen orientation lock

If you find that your Tab screen no longer changes when you rotate from protrait - landscape and vice versa.
It may be that you have accidentally locked it.

You can fix this by pulling down the hidden menu bar at the top of your screen (original 7") and unchecking the "orientation lock" button.

EDIT- Newer models can do this from the control/notifications panal, bottom RHS

When watching movies you can enable this lock by a very quick press of the power button.

Today's Did you know, Your GTAB Reset Options

if you are able to turn on the Tab

1. From the Home screen, Settings, Privacy.
(check the box "Back up my data", Un-check the box "Automatic Restore", this can be checked again after the reset,
but may restore the settings/data that was causing problems)
[best to test before you restore things one at a time & check to see if the problem has returned]

2. Touch Factory data reset, then follow the prompts to perform the reset.

Today's Did you know, Taking notes on your Tab and sending to your pc.

The stock App "memos" which comes with the GTab7" could not be easily exported to your pc for later printing.

Download TxtPad Lite from the Android market and once you have a memo or notes you can simply send them to your pc via Email and then you are able to print or save.

EDIT - 23/3/12 On more up to date units, Pen memo works perfectly for exporting of notes and memos

Today's Did you know, Headphones

Many people come on to this Forum to report that there isn't any sound coming out their headphones.
When inserting your headphones into the jack you need to push a little harder for the last mm to go in.

A little force at the end is all you need :good:

Today's Did you know, Your TAB WON'T TURN ON.

If your Tab hangs on the start up logo or you have been doing some changes (moving things to SD card, etc)
and everything is not as it seems, there are three levels of CPR you can administer.

The first is the "charge your Tab on Mains Charger for at least an hour" a quick press of the power button should show charge % on screen

The second is the magic - "Turn it off and back on again" this resets your Tab.

The third is the "Hold the power button in for 15-30 secs" especially good if you Tab is hanging at start up.

After that you may need to follow the factory reset options, detailed further on in this section.... here...

Today's Did you know, Watching movies on your Tab

I was surprised by the fact that so many guys are having problems with movie playback when hanging around the forum and decided to share some tips with green hands. Hope this helps people that are having video playback problems.

The 1st tip, better put Galaxy Tab friendly videos to the device. The Galaxy Tab plays various kinds of videos, but this does not mean it can play everything you throw at it. Let’s see Galaxy Tab supported file types:

Video: 3gp, mp4, avi, wmv, flv, mkv (Codec: MPEG4, H.263, Sorenson H.263, H.264, VC-1, DivX/XviD).
Audio: mp3, m4a, mp4, 3gp, 3ga, wma, ogg, oga, aac, flac.
We don’t see vob or mpg format here, which means the stock player does not play them.

The 2nd tip, with a powerful third-party media player you can play more videos, e.g. the above mentioned vob and mpg videos. There are various android optimized universal video players. Recommended media players:
Rock Player FEEWARE)
MoboPlayer(FEEWARE)
QQ Player(FEEWARE)

The 3rd tip, don’t put copy-protected contents onto the Galaxy Tab. Movies purchased from online video stores (e.g. iTunes, Amazon) are restricted to specific computers and devices only. Unfortunately Samsung Galaxy Tab is not granted to play DRM-protected videos. To have the device play these movie purchases, get yourself a DRM removal tool first (e.g. ChewTune).

The 4th tip, compress/convert your HD videos when necessary. By necessary I mean when the Galaxy Tab pops up an error message saying unsupported file or plays video in slow motion.
Before long I owned Galaxy Tab 7.0, I noticed that some 1080p contents tend to run very slow on the device. Lower resolutions run pretty well. When it comes to some 1080p .mkv and avi videos, the playing speed slows down. I tried several other media players and finally realized it has to do with the hardware itself, seems like the device can not handle very high bitrate properly. After down-scale bitrate to 4mpbs the videos plays just fine.

The 5th and last tip, the best settings for converting videos to Galaxy Tab depends. I’ve seen people asking for the “optimal settings” 3 or 4 times elsewhere, and am trying to answer this question. It is said that H.264 codec gives best quality at smallest file size, but I don’t see much difference between H.264 and MPEG-4. I tried to encoded an HD .mkv video to .mp4 with H.264 and MPEG-4 and find both play fine. DivX .avi videos look great too. I think the image quality is more related to video bitrate. When video bit rate is set higher, the converted video looks sharper. Here I put some test videos with settings for evaluation.

Sample 1- mp4 video
0:05:40 MP4 H.264/AAC 1280x720 1000kbps 53M

Sample 2- mp4 video
0:05:40 MP4 H.264/AAC 1280x720 2000kbps 94M

Sample 3- mp4 video
0:05:40 MP4 H.264/AAC 1920x1080 2000kbps 94M

Sample 4- mp4 video
0:05:40 MP4 H.264/AAC 1920x1080 4000kbps 175M

Sample 5- mkv video
0:05:40 MKV H.264/AAC 1280x720 1000kbps 53M

Sample 6- mkv video
0:05:40 MKV H.264/AAC 1920x1080 2000kbps 94M

Sample 7- wmv video
0:05:40 WMV WMV3/WAV 1280x720 1000kbps 51M

Sample 8- avi video
0:05:40 AVI Xvid/MP3 1280x720 1000kbps 48M

(click the links to play or download the sample videos )

These sample videos source a recent release Blu-ray “Thor”, I created them with a trial version of Pavtube Blu-ray Video Converter Ultimate (SHAREWARE), so there’s a watermark on the screen. Personally I think Sample 2 balance file size and video quality best.

Today's Did you know, Deleting unwanted empty HOME PAGES

Place a finger tip in one corner of the screen and your thumb in the diagonally opposite corner. Drag your two fingers to the centre of your Tab. You will now have your screens displayed and minimised, press on and drag any ones you don't need to the trash bin at the bottom. Tap the return key to take you back to the maximised view.

You can also add screens at this stage too.

EDIT 23/3/2012

For the newer models of tab (honeycomb OS) you have 5 home screens which cannot be added to or deleted.
For ICS models, see 7" original instructions as above

Today's Did you know, Creating Group Folders on your Tab 7.0.... ( May work for other models )

You can create New Folders on any of your Home Screens, and then drop Apps Shortcuts into them, from the Applications pages.

You can create folders on the home screen of your Samsung Galaxy Tab by tapping and holding an empty spot on the home screen and selecting Folders.
The folder is given a default name......guess what ... Folder !

If you want to rename it to something different, use these steps.

1. From the home screen, tap the folder to open it.

2. Tap and hold the top bar of the window that appears.

3. Type the folder name you wish to use.

4. Tap OK, and you have successfully renamed a home screen folder on your Samsung Galaxy Tab.

From the home screen that now contains your renamed Folder...... hit the Applications Icon
Select your App Icon you want to put in the Folder ...Hold it down until the home screen appears, and drop it in your Folder.

Job Done ! :D

Today's Did you know, Organising Gallery Photos (Including Instant Uploads/Auto Backup), Videos & Album Groups "MyFiles" "ES File Explorer Manager"

the Gallery shows all images on the Tab in folders, or held in a cache from online sources (such as Picasa)
(cached files can be cleared by going to settings, applications, manage applications, All, Gallery ... Clear Data
files stored on your Tab, will create a fresh Cache on opening Gallery)

by default photo's taken on Galaxy Tab/Note are stored in DCIM/Camera

open Gallery, you will see a list of Photo Albums, any Album you do not want to appear in Gallery (ie: music album art photos, apps photos, private stuff, you can hide with .nomedia :- https://play.google....a.nomedia&hl=en )

Photo Album Folders can be created with 'My Files' (or ES File Explorer File Manager :- https://play.google....droid.pop&hl=en )

Create a Folder : Photos : with sub folders as you require - ie: Home, Work, Holiday, Sallys Wedding ( your choices)
[any sub folder you do not want to appear in Gallery, name it with a . - ie .private album](these can still be accessed via 'My Files' or 'ES File Explorer')
[you can do the same with 'Video Folder' for videos]

there is NO 'Gallery Folder', files are 'collected' into the 'Gallery Cache' when your Tab is rebooted & a 'Media Scan' is performed

Photos from Picasa, G+, Dropbox or Facebook ... Instant Uploads/Auto Back-up

1. Go to Settings > Accounts (or Accounts & sync)

2. Select your Google account, then tap on your [email protected] to change your sync settings.

3. Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck the Sync Picasa Web albums option (or dropbox, G+, Facebook, Google Photos ... see 9.).
[leave 'sync Google+ Auto-backup' checked, to auto back-up photos taken on your Tab to G+)

4. Go back into Settings > Application Manager or Apps or Applications. This will depend on your Android configuration and version.

5. Go to Applications > All

6. Scroll down and find Gallery and select it.

7. Tap on both the Clear Data and Clear Cache options. This will reset the cache and also clear the previously synced Picasa (etc.) web albums from the Gallery app.

8. Go back to your Gallery app. You will notice that just your local photos and videos are listed.

9. If your Dropbox or Facebook media appears in the Gallery application, you can also do the same thing with your Facebook or Dropbox accounts. Go into your Facebook/Dropbox account in Settings > Accounts and then uncheck the appropriate sync photos options. Once you do that, you will again need to clear the cache and data on the Gallery app via steps 4-7 again.

[the above actions will not remove any photos from your Picasa (etc) accounts, to remove photos from these accounts, you need to goto the relevant account]

EDIT 23/3/12 Download the Quick pic App for better control/organisation of your photos :- https://play.google....PicFolder&hl=en

Today's Did you know, SAMSUNG KIES - repeated by popular demand.

Tab Stock Launcher required for Kies connection

Kies is a Free PC Program & available from Samsung Support :- http://www.samsung.c...ftware/KIES/JSP

Kies is a pc software that when your Tab is connected to it, allows you to see what is on your Tab and transfer things to your tab from other sources e.g. pictures from pc albums, music , contacts.
It is also the way you can back up the data on your Tab.
Should your Tab ever run into problems, a back up copy of your contacts etc will be available to access from Kies and transfer back onto your tab when your machine is restored.
If you purchase a new Tab, you can easily transfer all the data from your old machine to your new using Kies.
Kies also allows your Firmware to be updated when Samsung release a new version. Regular connection to kies will allow you to see if these updates have come through for your model.

Kies is a very simple, no frills software, which I find very easy to use and I have never had a problem with it. Others preferr more advanced methods of data back up and transfer but it works for me.

Kies tutorial http://www.samsung.c...IESTUTORIAL/JSP

to transfer files to & from Tab & PC with Kies
with Tab & PC connected by Kies, on your PC, open 'Basic Information', you will see 'Internal Memory' (& External Memory if present),
click on 'View in Explorer' & you will see the contents of the Tab Internal Memory (or External Memory)

now you can drag & drop, files & folders, to & from your PC & Tab

Kies connection problems (Tab Stock Launcher required for Kies connection)

1. Ensure your Tab is not in USB debugging mode:
Go to Settings, Applications, Development and make sure USB debugging is switched off/unchecked.
2. Press the Home Key on your Galaxy Tab and make sure it is not locked. If it is, unlock it.
3. Go to Settings, Display, Screen timeout, set to Maximum to ensure you Tab remains active throughout.
4. Plug the USB cable into the PC.
5. Plug the other end into the Galaxy Tab.
6a. Older versions of Kies: You will now see a picture of a USB connector entitled MTP Application, with a message on the bottom saying Connected Press home key to quit Samsung Kies.
6b. Newer versions of Kies: You will see an MTP-Initialization message in the notification bar. If successful you will shortly see that message change to MTP Connected.
7. Wait for Windows to pop up an Auto Play window.
8. Select Open Device to view files using Windows Explorer
9. In the window that this opens, double click Phone/Tab.
10. Keep this window open, minimize it if you want to. If it remains open for any length of time (10+ seconds) then you have a great chance.
11. Open Kies. As long as Windows Explorer's Phone/Tab window is still open then you will probably find Kies detects the Galaxy Tab.
12. Kies should now be attempting to connect to your Galaxy Tab (this can take about 15-30 secs)
13. Once connected you will see your phone/Tab appear in the top left of Kies
14. Begin using Kies.

(On Honeycomb tabs everything should be automatic, USB debugging is normally unchecked and you don't need to press home to come out of Kies it's done for you.
Any time you have moved data around, after the function is complete, it immediately returns to the homescreen.
Uncoupling, ie set pc to "safely remove hard drive before disconnecting".)

If unsuccessful along any of these step then give it a few attempts. Don't just give up after the first connection failure to do something more drastic. I have had the Auto Play window (point 8 ) not popping up at all after connection, or it pops up, stays open only for a few seconds, and it closes itself. If this happens, unplug the USB from the Galaxy Tab and repeat from step 4.
If reconnecting the cable at the Galaxy Tab end keeps failing after several attempts, unplug both ends of the USB cable and repeat from step 2.
If this again keeps failing, unplug both ends of the USB cable and try a few more times in another USB port, repeating from step 2. If it still continues to fail each time then more drastic action is required:
(try an alternative PC if possible)

If you can NEVER get your PC to see your Galaxy Tab
You need to wipe all existence of Kies from your PC and try again. To do this follow these steps:

Open up your PC's Device Manager (right click Computer, Properties, Device Manager) then plug in the USB cable and connect cable to Galaxy Tab. You may find that the device list refreshes every second or two and the device does not get added. If the Auto Play window pops up, then device manager will stop refreshing and you will see your Galaxy Tab appear under the Portable Devices section (as Galaxy Tab or new drives). If Auto Play does not pop up, Device Manager will continually refresh. This indicates a problem:
1. Uninstall Kies (use Windows Control Panel Uninstall if possible)
2. If not run program files\Samsung\Kies\uninstall.exe & program files\Samsung\usb drivers\uninstall.exe (This is important! This does not get done on a Kies uninstall if you are on a version of Kies prior to 2.3.1.12044_18 10)
3. Reboot
4. Delete the Samsung folder from Program Files.
5. If you want to be even more thorough, run a free utility called "CCleaner" on the files and registry, and if your confident, remove anything that references program files\samsung\Kies & Samsung\USB Drivers in the registry using "regedit". (You have to know what your doing with "regedit", as it is possible to "break" your PC if you do something wrong).
6. Reboot then reinstall Kies.
7. Plug in your Galaxy Tab.

SAMSUNG KIES NOT ALLOWING UPDATES TO ICS from 3.2

The following is what I did to update from HC 3.2 to ICS when Kies initially told me I couldn't.

DO a Reset on your tab.
After doing a reset on your tab, you should be able to connect to Kies. It seems that the problem with
Kies on HC 3.2 happens after updates to pre-installed apps, and/or installing additional apps.
Make sure you have the latest version of Kies on your PC.
After the reset, don't update anything or install any apps. Just set up the tab enough to get it going.
When you connect to Kies, you should get the update available message box. From there, follow on screen info to update.
Once you're running ICS ok, you should be able to connect to and use Kies without having to do a reset.
That's one of the issues that seems to have been fixed with ICS.
If you're already running ICS and still having a problem with Kies, unfortunately I can't help with that.
My tab works ok with Kies.
I should add that the only time I ever used Kies was to update to ICS. I don't store anything on my tab that's important.
I keep a dozen or so photos on it to use with Photoshop Touch and a few other apps, just for fun. They're on my PC, so
getting them back on to the tab only takes a minute or two.

Today's Did you know, Receiving notifications when your Tab is in sleep mode. ( 7 PLUS users and possibly HC others.)

If you still want to hear notifications of Email, txts, Talk, etc when your screen is asleep, do the following.

SETTINGS - SCREEN - MODE - switch from Standard to DYNAMIC.

You can now save battery and stay in touch with your friends :good:

Today's Did you know, 2 WIDGETS I have just discovered

For those of you who do a lot with MUSIC this will not come as a surprise but I have just discovered these and I think they are brilliant.

Posted Image
If you have TuneIn installed you may be using the App short cut on your homescreen, I was.

However this WIDGET allows you to see what is playing and control the App while doing other things, browsing etc.
It takes you straight to the radio station you have playing and gives you a live display of what you are listening to.

Posted Image

Likewise- I find this Amazon MP3 WIDGET so much better than the music App installed.
My Amazon downloads and my albums pasted from media player are all easily controlled using this Widget, again without going into the App.

You see what is playing, can skip tracks, pause the song and get very easy access to your music or go into the full App.

I think both these widgets really make for better multi tasking while listening to your music.
Hopes this helps the more simple users amongest us, like me :D
