I have no GPS function at all. It will turn on but never finds any satellites. It had been working and stopped at the worst possible time. I am on a trip to Japan. I used RMaps to cache maps of Osaka and when I am on WiFi with Google location on it can find me. If I turn on GPS it never finds a single satellite. I verified that with a GPS Test app. Google maps id dead too.

Any ideas. Is there a hard reset I can try or some way to try to turn the GPS on by force in the Android OS?

OK so it started working. Will Flight Mode disable the GPS but not tell you? I had it in flight mode with WiFi on so I did not get hit with a multimillion dollar bill for international roaming by accident. I went in and turned off all the cell services and turned off flight mode. After a couple of power cycles I noticed it was seeing satellites.

Not sure what happened but I an not going to use Flight Mode or turn off GPS until I am ready to go home!

Yes Airplane mode disables the GPS. In fact with my GT I have to turn Airplane mode off, turn on the GPS then reboot it to have the GPS work. Simply turning off Airplane mode and turning on the GPS doesn't work.

It would be nice if someplace it would say GPS disabled. It let me turn it on but no notification was given that it was not functioning. I have turned of the Cell Data Service now and I am leaving GPS on all the time. I am inside a lot so I hope that will help it get a lock faster when I go outside.

The GPS would probably get a signal lock quicker if you leave the 3G activated since it uses an AGPS that uses cell towers to help determine position. It shouldn't use up any of your data plan just having it on if you are not using any online maps, of course any other Apps that update at regular intervals will use some data but not much.

My gps is seeming to be a rather buggy as well. I can pick up satellite signal(even inside) when i first power on the tab. If i turn gps off and let tab sit for a while, next time i turn gps to get a location lock - i can not get any signal. Google maps will just tell me my location is temporarily unavailabe. If i immediatley power cycle the tab, when its done booting back up - i get gps signal again.

Btw im running verizon brand tab, no data plan

When in flight mode you can turn WiFi back on from the status bar button and it works perfectly. I will save the laughs for something funny.

It looked like you are also able to turn the GPS back on and it indicates it is on just like WiFi but it really isn't.

My GPS using Googlemap failed to lock on, I tested the Tab with various GPS apps only to find that the Tab is failing to lock on. Since the Tab is new, I took it to official Samsung (Hong Kong) office. I was reliably infomed by Samsung that the Tab does not have GPS as we would define like the Galaxy S (which I also have). The "GPS" on the Tab only functions as AGPS meaning it requires mobile signal as well as wifi to locate your position not satellite, the Tab cannot be used like Galaxy S - a reasonably reliable GPS device.

I was absolutely shocked!

That is totally not true......

The Tab has a very good gps chip. The "A" means that it has assistance available from wifi and sim to help establish a quick signal lock, but it is not necessary to have either service running for it to function as a navigation device.

It just means that it will take longer to establish the "first use" satellite lock, which is quite normal for gps anyway. If you are able to use either of these services initially, then it is preferable, but once a lock is established you should find that satellite acquisition will take place quicker, even without them.

When running a GPS Test app it will show the number of satellites locked in. It definitely has true GPS. Another case of uninformed Sales or Support Staff. When I bought mine the Verizon sales person tried to sell me their MiFi mobile hotspot that is needed with the WiFi only iPad to get on their cell network. She was better informed to help her next customer when I left the store.

+1 here. With first lock I needed to turn on the 3G connection briefly on my Verizon Tab - after that no issue - I can turn on the GPS without it. DO NOT BE CONFUSED by the "GPS on" status when in airplane mode. The way to ensure only GPS is turn off airplane mode thus allowing all connectivity. Then turn on GPS, then turn OFF 3G. GPS is very sensitive.

I am not able to use the GPS on my GT at all, whenever I switch it on I get " Checking navigation availability" nothing else happens no matter how long I leave it on.

I can use the Map function OK. already downloaded google map 5.

Does your GPS work with any other Apps........like Google Maps Navigation, or any other navigation, for that matter.
