The problem appears to have been solved......
I uninstalled Play Store, but left Play Store Services in place. I downloaded/installed Play Store, but that did not help, so deleted the new installation.
It now seems that automatic updates has downloaded and installed (?via Play Services?) the latest version of Play Store!
Now sorted. - I hope.
