I had a similar problem with my SD Card also. The problem is with Samsung the permissions on the SD Card have been set in such a way that you can only write to the SD Card using the bundle apps like "My Files" that came with the OS but any other third party apps wont be able to write since they lack the appropriate permissions. Use the bundles "My Files" app and you should be ok. There is no easy way to fix this without Samsung helping out or rooting the Tab yourself.

Hope this helps.

Its not mine, but work perfect...

Simple solution for external sdcard write access on Android 3.2...if you're rooted

I've found a simple solution for gaining write access to the external sdcard (/mnt/sdcard2) on Android 3.2. The sdcard is mounted r/w, but the owning group is media_rw which is linked to the WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE permission. Unfortunately, this permission was not required for access to the external sdcard prior to 3.2 so most file management utilities do not request it when they run...meaning they only have read access to the card.

The simple solution, if you're rooted, is as follows:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions and make sure you have mounted the file system r/w.
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...<group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart your tablet.

After this change, any apps that request the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission (which includes almost anything that access either of the sdcards) will gain group membership in both sdcard_rw AND media_rw, giving them r/w access to both sdcard filesystems.

I'm just the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy GT-P6800 7.7" Tab, unfortunately I cannot move Apps to the SD card, there is no facility in App Management and I've installed Android Assistant and that won't do it, the SD card is superfluous to requirments on this Tab if it cannot be done......any suggestions would be most welcome

Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum and the tab owners group, have had androids for the past couple years. I reicently bought a Galaxy tab 2 8gig running ICS. My issue is that the apps2sd programs don't offer the move button for the individual apps, it shows they can be moved but the normal space for the button (like on my phones)is blank. I've tried more than one flavor or the app and the result is the same. Thanks for the response in advance

Hi, I just bought my 7+ the other day.

Regarding inability to move apps to the SD Card, do you think that this is done knowingly by Samsung in order to curtail side loading of pirated/bad apps?

Can apps placed in the SD card via the PC work with the tab? If not, then I think the reason above seems more logical. Therefore we cannot expect Samsung to correct this perceived shortcoming.

What do you think?

Thanks for this site.

SD CARD STORAGE – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Here are some basic guidelines to help you get started.
(If anyone spots any helpful additions or mistakes please let me know and I will EDIT)

External SD Card - Honeycomb, ICS & Jellybean

About Moving Apps, or not as is the case

Apps will not currently transfer to the SD card using the standard software on the 7 plus

If you install a third-party file explorer, Perhaps it is Astro File Manager, or ES File EXplorer. You find that you can read files from your SD card but you always get an error when you try to do a write operation, whether it's copy or move in, delete, or create a new directory.

But it works fine if you use the default file explorer. (My Files)

Turns out Google had for some reason since Honeycomb 3.2 decided to split the write permissions for the internal memory (the path of which is confusingly named /mnt/sdcard) and external SD card memory (the path being /mnt/sdcard/extStorages/SdCard) into WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE respectively.

Apps to SD

The sdcard is mounted r/w, but the owning group is media_rw which is linked to the WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE permission.
Unfortunately, this permission was not required for access to the external sdcard prior to 3.2 so most file management utilities do not request it when they run...
meaning they only have read access to the card.

Before Honeycomb 3.2, apps only had to request for the permission WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and they would have write access to both the internal and external so-called "sdcard" sets of memory.
Now, apps have to request for WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE if they want to write to the external SD card, but many of them have not yet been updated to do so yet. This affects file managers / explorer / compression utility type apps most often because users would tend to use them to copy / move / zip files within the file system.

Moving files from Internal memory to SD card
you can still write to a mounted SD card via your PC,
using a USB connection to copy files to the SD card or edit any SD-card-stored files

you just can't do it from the tablet itself.
That means in an Android file manager utility like ES File Explorer, you'll be able to browse through the SD card and access its files,
but if you try to copy files to the SD card or edit any SD-card-stored files, you'll find those options to be grayed out and unavailable.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saving your DCIM Camera photos :–

In the camera app go to the COG symbol (settings) – scroll down to STORAGE – select – chose memory card. DONE

Photograph albums from your pc (using your tab as a mass storage device) :-

Plug you Tab into the USB port of your pc – your desktop will come up with the following options (windows XP):-

Open device to view files
Sync digital files
Take no action

Select the first option – you pc will then recognise your tablet and the SD card as two separate storage areas – Open SD card –
you can now Drag and drop or copy and paste your albums directly onto the card.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Music from windows media player libraries :- (assumes you have already ripped you music)
Connect you tab to the pc and open windows media player – your device will be recognised – in Sync set it to card.
Open your library – albums – drag and drop each album (or all albums in a list) to the sync area – sync. If you interrupt albums will only partly sync.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be careful to always eject hardware before disconnecting your Tab.

Tab Connected to PC with Kies = No "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" Icon shows
(on the Tab, tap to goto HomeScreen, then disconnect Tab from PC)
Some 7 plus units default back to the home screen automatically

Tab shows on Windows 7 as "Portable Media Player" = No "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" Icon shows
(on the Tab, tap to goto HomeScreen, then disconnect Tab from PC)

Tab shows on Windows 7 as "Removable Disk (H:)" for internal memory = The "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" Icon shows
(on the PC click the Safely Remove Hardware, Eject Samsung Tab, then disconnect Tab from PC)

Tab shows on Windows 7 as "Removable Disk (I:)" for external memory = The "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" Icon shows
(on the PC click the Safely Remove Hardware, Eject Samsung Tab, then disconnect Tab from PC)

Hi
In my GT-P6210 I have the same reported problem.
Can't move app's to SDCard and on Manage applications don't have that option.
I install App2SD and in MOVABLE tab option I have 4 applications that can be moved
but ON SD CARD tab option I get this warning:
"The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated.
Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device."

This is a firmware problem or device malfunction?

Thanks

Regarding moving files to the extSD; I have just verified that the App "Filemanager HD" will do this. To test it I made a folder named "Apps" in my extSD, and copied my "Youtube" apk to that folder from "system".

This does Not mean that apps will run from or store data to the extSD. but it does provide the ability to move general data to the extSD from within the phone. This App is made by "Rythem", and I believe it is available through the "Play" store. I point out that I have only transfered one file, and am otherwise unfamiliar with this App. Perhaps others can test it and chime in.

Also,to all of you interested in the mSD access problem, the guys in the SGT 7+ forum on another (rooting) site have found a "fix" for this problem. The SGT 7+ runs Honeycomb, but the fix is a simple permission change, and therefore might work on the SGT 2 7.
[EDIT] only works on rooted Tabs

I am going to explore this possibility, and encourage any of you familiar with modifying android script to do the same. The fix seems relatively simple, so perhaps it will work on the SGT 2 7 ICS. Unfortunely most of my background is with WINDOWS, so, while I know what needs to be done, at this point I am not sure of the process needed to do it. Hopefully more experienced modders can check this out and let us all know if it is helpful.

As with some other newer tab models, there is not a direct route to move your Apps with the current OS.

No, but you can put files on the MicroSD Card via a PC, such as Music, Video, and Photo's.........and your Tab should be able to access them...

Not all Apps will work from your MicroSD card....

Go to....

Settings / Applications / Manage applications / All ....

Select the App you want to move.

If "Move to SD card" is bold you can move that Application. If it is "greyed out" you cannot.

Basically, you are restricted to moving only the Apps that have been designed to be moved and operate from external memory, as explained in this post....

http://www.thegalaxy...dpost__p__44934

Files containing video, music, and office type files such as word, spreadsheet documents, and pdf's etc can be moved to external memory to free up internal memory for Apps. Any Apps that you have obtained from Google Play can be deleted from your Tab, and reinstalled later, if required....

Hi everyone

I bought a Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 this week, along with a 64gb SD card. Out of the 20 apps I have on the tablet so far, only 3 actually let me transfer part of the data to SD card (netflix, Ebay and Paypal). Now, I really hope I'm missing something here because the tablet only comes with 16gb memory, 5 of which is taken up with the operating system (I can't believe they are allowed to advertise the fact that it has 16gb storage when a quarter of that is effectively gone already).

Can somebody tell me how I can move across my apps as I'm able to do it on my phone easily enough.

Thanks

I'm new to Tablets Using a GT-P3113. I moved 5 Apps to my SD Card. They were the only ones I could move. Four of the Apps will not open.

How do I move Apps to the SD Card, so that they are usable, so I save space on my device. Is rooting the device the only way?

Thanks
