I’m having problems with the system using my 32 GB micro SD card.

When using the ‘myFiles’ app (is this referred to as the file manager?) I can navigate to the SD Card /Root/extStorages/SdCard. I can see the “LOST.DIR” directory. I connect to my PC and transfer a file to the LOST.DIR directory. I can then see this file in the Tab’s file manager. This seems to indicate (to me, anyway) that the SD Card itself is not the problem.

When I click on an application, either from App2SD or the Mangage Applications from within the Settings, it never gives me a button with the option to move to SD storage. I only have the “Clear Data” button available in the Storage section.

When using App2SD,
I click on the “On Sd Card” menu selection and get the following:
The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage
is emulated. Move app to SD function may not be supported by this device.

I’ve formatted the card from the tablet, remounted the SD Card, but the symptoms described above are unchanged. After the mount, I see the LOST.DIR directory. I assume this means the OS was able to write to the card.

My hardware configuration:
• Tab 7.0 plus, which runs Android 3.2
• A 32 GB SanDisk microSD card.

External SD Card - Honeycomb & ICS

About Moving Apps, or not as is the case

If you install a third-party file explorer, Perhaps it is Astro File Manager, or ES File EXplorer. You find that you can read files from your SD card but you always get an error when you try to do a write operation, whether it's copy or move in, delete, or create a new directory.

But it works fine if you use the default file explorer. (My Files)

Turns out Google had for some reason since Honeycomb 3.2 decided to split the write permissions for the internal memory (the path of which is confusingly named /mnt/sdcard) and external SD card memory (the path being /mnt/sdcard/extStorages/SdCard) into WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE respectively.

Apps to SD

The sdcard is mounted r/w, but the owning group is media_rw which is linked to the WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE permission.
Unfortunately, this permission was not required for access to the external sdcard prior to 3.2 so most file management utilities do not request it when they run...
meaning they only have read access to the card.

Before Honeycomb 3.2, apps only had to request for the permission WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and they would have write access to both the internal and external so-called "sdcard" sets of memory.
Now, apps have to request for WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE if they want to write to the external SD card, but many of them have not yet been updated to do so yet. This affects file managers / explorer / compression utility type apps most often because users would tend to use them to copy / move / zip files within the file system.

As for Ice Cream Sandwich, latest reports are that, yes, they are going to continue with this separate permission model.
Hopefully in the future, more apps would have been amended to include the necessary permission/security settings.

Will be following this thread with interest... I'm having a similar problem on a Tab 7.7, Android 3.2, trying to use a 32 GB SanDisk microSD card. I get the same message from App2SD.

I'm able to format the SD card from Settings: Storage. The card does show up under "SD card" on the Storage page. I can access the card in the file manager. I created a couple directories, copied an MP3 file there, and Poweramp is able to play that MP3 file. I just can't seem to move apps to the card.

I don't think the card's actually defective, because tried it in my Galaxy S2 phone and the phone recognized it fine. I also tried the 16 GB SanDisk card which I use in the Galaxy S2, and that card didn't fully work in the Tab either.
I wonder if could it be something about these SanDisk cards that is not compatible?

I bought another ScanDisk sdcard and unfortunately my Tab doesn't recognise it; complains that the card is damaged and have to reformat which never finishes :-(

I bought a 32GB Kingston for Samsung Note and there's no problem

I bought the sdcard locally; when I inserted the card into the Tab it could detect the card until I start to move from the root to the sdcard;
too bad I threw the packaging away

I did notice the card could appear to be seated and the slot cover would close without the card actually being "clicked" into place. I'm still having issues with the card but definitely this is one thing to check for.

I also have the same issue with my 7 plus. I have tried 3 different SD cards and all three had the same results. They work fine for media files and such, but I cannot transfer apps to them at all. I called Samsung tech support about a month ago and they did not even realize what a 7 plus was. They just kept trying to correct me by giving me instructions for a regular old 7 and insisted that it could indeed transfer apps to the SD card through app management. My guess is that this feature was removed from the 7.0 plus for some reason or another. I'd suggest calling Samsung about it and maybe they'll take a hint and fix the problem.

3.2 doesn't allow for applications to be moved to SD Card, like previous OS 2.3,for example. The 3.2 handles in a different way, so SD Card is only good for downloading music, movies, etc, no applications.

Thank you for that information, it may answer a lot of questions.

I have now been able to set up my camera DCIM to move all new photos to the SD card, I will try to put a whole album on later, once I have transferred it onto my tab from my back up in kies.

I formatted it twice already in my pc (FAT32) but it won't show up in my 7 Plus. It looks OK when inserted in the notebook. I also tried with a second microSD from a friend's Xoom and still no luck... Is my tab faulty?

Any ideas?

Hi,
I'm hoping there is someone more knowledgeable than me who can help.
I'm using a 7.7 and have installed a Samsung 32GB memory card (from Amazon UK) and have copied files to the card from the desktop. I can read these files but using File Manager or ES File Explorer I cannot write to the memory card. Likewise if I use App Backup and Restore and set the backup folder to be on the memory card it reports errors such as permission denied. Do I need to set write permissions for the memory card? Strangely though if I use the stock file manager My files I can write, make folders, delete etc to the card. I also have a Galaxy tab 7 and a 16GB memory card and have had no SD card problems with that tablet. I have tried putting the 16GB card in the 7.7 but again could not write to it.

Is there anybody out there who can help?
Thanks

Apologies sounds like this has already bee raised. Seems it's in Samsung's court

It says Forec stop, uninstall, cache, permissions, etc. Also when I d/l a game from the internet can choose to put it directly on the sd card?

It appears that on our Honeycomb 7+'s , Samsung didn't feel it was neccesary for us to to be able to transfer our Apps to the SD card and have omitted this function. However you can save your photos, music and movies to the card.
