Ive done a fair bit of googling to try to find out if the Tab can play mkv files out of the box, all i find is links discussing how to convert mkv files to mpeg to be played back
What id like to know please is if the Tab can play them without converting, i am talking about a standard say 720p mkv video file
thanks in advance

Hello.
The tab plays 720p mkv videos but they need to be less than 4GB otherwise they won't copy because the tab is on FAT32 if I am not mistaken.

Mkv, flv, avi, 3gp, divx, mp4, and I tjink that it can play rmvb too. The tab is also capable of playong 1080p videos, something that even old netbooks can't do.

The best A/V settings for converting big MKV files for Galaxy Tab:
Video
Video Codec- H.264
Video Format- .mp4
Resolution- 1280*720
Video Bitrate – 1500kbps
Frame Rate – 30fps
Audio
Audio Codec- AAC
Audio Bitrate- 128kbps
Sample Rate- 44.1khz
Audio Channel- Stereo
This would shrink 100mins' contents to 1-2GB and still keep good quality. There are video converters that can save the settings for you.

I've watched many mkvs on mine. Up to 720p works great. 1080 not so well, and I am using a p1000 Galaxy Tab.
