First firmware update available for the Note. Takes it up to Gingerbread 2.3.6
Update is also available OTA which is the method I used.
Only change I can see is an improvement in performance, which is nice

Galaxy Note Firmware Update Gingerbread 2.3.6
Posted 05 December 2011 - 04:53 PM (#2)
Thanks for the tip, Queeg. I did the download OTA and everything seemed to go smoothly.
Since then, I have had trouble with my email. Gmail works OK, but the built-in email client
gives trouble when off the wifi.
I was out in Exeter this morning (big treat for country folk) and received an email which
needed a reply. 3G was available, so I compiled a reply - but it refused to go out. I had
to phone the person concerned.
Getting home again, I found it would work with wifi, and receive messages without it, but will not
send them. We don't have 3G here, we have G (which I see stands for GPRS). Nevertheless, emails
come in to the email client, but refuse to go out - until I switch wifi on again.
I have tried a cold boot, but no change. Is anyone else having trouble ?

with the built in email client, have you tried removing your account, rebooting, then adding your account again ?
the update may have caused a glitch in settings

What email provider are you using? Does this happen to be the same as your broadband (assuming you have broadband). The reason I ask is that over WiFi you are using your providers SMTP server and your providers conection. On 3G etc you are trying to send mail through your providers SMTP server, but connection via another provider (your SIM card provider). Some ISP's dont like this and will block you (incase you are sending spam or abusing their mail service).
Who is providing your SIM card for your Note? I ask because the SIM providers give their own SMTP server for use in sending email through the cell network, thus bypassing any restrictions on your email service.
You can recieve email from any connection as you are not able to cause problems in that direction (POP) so ISPs seldome restrict access (again I assuming your using a POP email).
If it worked before the update (specifically over the cell network) then it may be some corruption and deleting your email account and setting it up again may solve it, but its unlikley.
If you can tell me the following then I'll be able to help more :
Who is your email provider
Who Is your ISP (internet landline provider)
Who is your SIM card provider
It should just be a simple case of changing you SMTP server and all will be good.
You can PM me if you prefer not to post the above info on a public forum.

From the Home Screen tape Menu and select Settings, scroll down to About Phone and tap to open then tap Software Update then Update .
This update is in the UK on a SIM free XEU CSC device.
Hope that helps

Just to thank Queeg for his email advice.
After several futile conversations with my service provider Queeg gave me a setting for outgoing mail using gmail, which worked first time.
It just shows the value of this excellent forum and its supportive members.

Samsung dont supply firmware for download outside of the kies platform.
However, you can get firmware versions from -
http://www.sammobile...thread.php?t=27
you will have to register to get the download links but it's free. This is the new site for samfirmwares, which I have used myself.
please remember, flashing using odin (which is samsung software) and other versions of firmware may invalidate warranty.
Hope that helps.
