What do I need to buy to be able to plug my wifi dongle into my SamTab 10.1. Some kind of USB socket coverter / adaptor maybe?

You don't need anything to connect your 10.1 to a Mifi unit. You connect to it via your built-in Wifi.
If your 10.1 has 3G as well as Wifi.....then the Mifi is overkill, because the Mifi has a 3G SIM in it that is the connection to the Three network.
So just to summarise, a Mifi is really only advantageous if your 10.1 is a Wifi only version.

Hello, I'm in UK - I bought the wifi only tab recently, and asked the helpful chap at John Lewis if I could plug a wifi dongle in if I bought the USB adapter. He said it wouldn't work, as the required drivers would not be present. He suggested the only solution would be a Mifi unit, which I bought and which works well (I bought an unlocked one, but have only used it with a 3 data sim as yet). If what I was told is true, that's quite annoying if you already own a dongle

Pretty sure you need some kind of 3g toggler hack + the enabler app and the usb adaptor. Infact probably just going down a route thats more hassle than its worth (root and custom rom) - mifi as wizz said is a simple solution. Or tether it to a smart phone which is basically the same thing.

Its fairly clear that the gtab doesnt have a usb port for a dongle due to the hardware estate and im fairly confident any literature on the gtab doesnt say you can use a dongle - so its a bit unfair to knock it for not taking a dongle lol.
The info is out there....... and if the chap from john lewis pointed out it cant take a dongle then id be asking myself "why did i buy it when i was told i couldnt use a dongle?"

Don't know if you're referring to my post Scottyf79, but I love my GT! I was asking the question to understand what I'd need for the few occasions when I wouldn't be using home or work wifi. The Mifi works well for me, and seems a reasonable solution. However, if I already owned a dongle and was hoping to use that, I'd be a bit disappointed. BTW asking the question of the staff in mobile phone shops selling the GT certainly didn't give me the answers I needed. Not for the first time I was impressed with the depths of their ignorance of the product, and their indifference to me as a potential customer. I could easily have been misled.

Edited my long winded rattle into 2 points
1. Still cant figure how anyone would be disapointed it doesnt take a dongle.......which leads me onto my next point
2. To call staff ignorant is pot and kettle, the information is freely available for people to look up for themselfs. Why pin your hopes on someone elses knowledge, damn sure id be researching a bit before throwing £400+ at a tablet.
"hoping" sums it up really
