Thank you

Bear in mind the EU Galaxy Tab 7" has the capability to be used as a phone over here but the USA service providers blocked that ability over there

Appreciate the prompt response and thank you for the link to the user manual. Although I can confirm the SIM slot, there is nothing beyond Google Talk that describes the device as a phone.
It is interesting that EU allows using a 3G device as a phone, whereas it is restricted here in the United States. Doesn't seem fair for the consumer!
Question
Can you suggest a source where I could purchase the EU version of the P7300? Or are there reasons I should not consider such an acquisition???
Many thanks,
Howard

reasons to consider, future updates, repairs, service providers blocking call ability even though you have it
(I have seen reports of AT&T users receiving Emails advising blocking account)
double check the model GT-P7300 has wifi & 3G --- GT-P7310 is wifi only

No dialer, no micro sd card.
I have managed to download GO Contacts Ex ... with a dialer and valid SIM card, still cannot make gsm voice call.
If anyone knows how to enable the 8.9 3G to make gsm calls... please enlighten.
By the way, mine is Honeycomb 3.1

It's your ISP's I'm afraid Howard.
They believe they are going to make more money out of you, if they force you to have both a phone and a Tablet Contract.
They also charge you exorbitant rates for Data over there, compared with the UK here.
Smacks of Big Business and Monopoly, I'm afraid. You need some better Consumer bodies, to stem their greedier excesses.

Have you read a hack in htc flyer. As its have same case as your galaxy tab 8.9. Its shipped without voice call ability. But the guys from xda-developer have already got a hack with the flyer so it can do a voice call.
Try look at http://www.addictive...g-how-to-guide/
Me also have interest on hack this tab. Because I'm considering to buy one (if the voice call work). Can you provide me with your galaxy tab 8.9 build.prop file? thanks

That's rather odd; the device is not officially released in the EU and yet there is a manual?

Hi Andy:
Ooopss...no Micro-SD card??? I missed that from the specification and I appreciate you bringing this to my attention...If I decide on this device, then I will need to buy the 64GB device, since I cannot increase memory with a Micro-SD card. I like to use my iRecord device to convert movies and store them on the Tablet. With 16 GB only, I could only store 10-12 movies before running out of memory. That's not good...
I spoke with an online retailer and discussed your observations. He had the same experiences as you, but said he was going to continue his investigation. If I hear anything positive I will post it on this forum...
Best Regards
Howard

Hello Wizz:
Yes...that is the crux of the whole situation. In this day and age, there is no reason why every Tablet cannot perform GSM Voice calls. But I guess the ISP's have so much leverage over the manufacturer and the consumer! My Viewsonic Viewpad 7 works incredibly as a phone and allowed me to eliminate a smartphone. If only the screen was 8.9" I could stop my research and continue on my merry way!
Appreciate your comments! Thank you...

I had rooted my 8.9 and installed SuperUser and File Manager HD. Located build.prop file but I was not able to find the same information quoted in addictivetips. So I added them in;
ro.ril.reject.cs.ss.enabled=0
ro.ril.reject.mo.ussd.enabled=0
ro.phone.function=1
Rebooted and ... nothing happens. No additional dialer. Go Contacts Ex is still not able to dial.
Any other tips?

The only calls you can make are VOIP etc. I believe the 8.9 does support SMS and MMS though......

I have seen some webpages where it says its possible to make phone calls via the 8.9.
I can send text messages but can't make a phone call. It seems the tab wants to make a call via skype or whatsapp.
I thought there would be an inbuilt phone dialer or do I have to get a third party app? If so, which one is recommended?
Thanks in advance!

I think I've seen a hack to get around this on XDA Developers, but don't have the technical knowhow to fix it if it goes wrong.
Has anyone found another way around this? I really want to use this to take work calls with a headset - and only carry two devices, not three!
