firstly try plugging the tab into Kies.. < this is important***
Open the Tar file and confirm that the zImage file is 6,301,032 bytes.. there are some mispacked versions available..
if you are on JP9, and the Tar size matches, then the next option would be to try a reflash of the kernel..
Just make sure you run odin (1.7) and load the PDA file before you plug the tab in.. plugging the Tab in first can cause some odd behaviours..

Seek, and you shall find..
Use the SEARCH, and I'll be kind..

That should fix it.. if not, then you may have to flash a stock ROM.. but we'll worry about that if it comes to it..
Theres a couple of ways you could have come up with the name James.. which one did you use?
:edit:
if the JQ1 zImage is 6,154kb then it was a bad one anyway.. either that or an older deprecated version..

I do not understand "Theres a couple of ways you could have come up with the name James.. which one did you use?"
after flashing the image and rebooting the tab hangs at the "samsung" screen. I then flashed the file mentioned in my original post and tab reboots and goes to setup screen where I have no touch screen. I did not expect reflashing to fix problem just wanted to see if I could get past samsung screen. The link you gave me said something about not being a rom but a modified kernel. I have not a clue as to what that means but sure that you do. Again, thanks for the help.

try flashing the JME version from the XDA link, and if that one does not work, then the proper JQ1 kernel from there..
other than that, you will need to get hold of an original JM2 kernel, probably from samfirmware or XDA..
If you cant get that, then it may be that you will probably need to flash a full ROM.. the stock gingerbread that Overcome provides for setting up for their ROM is a great place to start.. then you can install the Dip7 kernel and ROM which has root and some oc'ing also.. or just go for the full overcome experience.. Dip7 one is great, but it can be a little unstable if you undervolt it..
Then theres the Boca ROM. that is stupidly fast (but battery killing) although it's one of those things that you either love or hate..
whichever way you decide, let me know and I'll try to help you through it..

New P1000L/N version released!
Kernel Download : LINK
should make it all work properly again if none of the others will..
The p1000L/N versions do have some differences, but I'm not sure why it would fail to flash a pretty much stock kernel..

Hey thanks gainn, I have tried flashing some of the other files from xda but nothing is working. I keep coming back to the setup screen but still no touch screen to select input. I wondered if a keyboard attachment would solve the input problem to finish the setup. I will take a look at these files when I get home, work computer will not allow access. Thanks for all your time.

Well no, I made a screen shot but the gallery app is not working and so far have not been able to find it. I saw a post where you replied to someone checking on gingerbread update back in may. They were in the US and had purchased the same model from walmat as did I. The numbers look the same but could have been JM1. Now the original flash in the first post I was on gingerbread.
update: I found the screen saves from my tab
PDA P1000NVFJM2
PHONE P1000NUBJM2
CSC P1000NTTTJM1
the above files were the orignal files before upgrading to gingerbread.
After upgrade
Gingerbread.VFJP5
Baseband P1000nUBJP3
maybe this will help

It does say all over that thread that you should flash with Heimdall.. apart from this one.. I assume by that omission that it doesnt matter which tool you use.. I'd try odin first, and then Heimdall after if it dont like it
It's from this thread just in case you need to check on anything..

flashing the froyo kernel (which is actually not that different from the first GB one) should have changed the kernel ID to froyo, but the build number should still be your gingerbread one..

I dont see why it didnt work, but without direct access to the unit I'm just not able to figure out whats going on..
JP7 full ROM > http://hotfile.com/d..._UBJP3.rar.html
P1 .pit file > http://www.multiupload.com/ZL9HDOGI5V
obviously this would erase any data on there, and is a bit more complex than just flashing a kernel..
then once you have that, you can root with the HumberOS kernel from this bit

I've just ported CF-Root to new Gingerbread Kernel.
Thread about CF-Root
Kernel Download
Flashed by Heimdall 1.0.2b
Uncompress file and write follow command:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage

Gainn you are either a genius or a good guesser, I got my tab back then tried to flash a file for my phone and csc, at this point everything quite, I could not even get the download mode to work, when I plugged the charger in no battery symbol nothing. I finally plug the tab into my usb port on my laptop started odin3 but did not get yellow box or comport connection, I left it plugged in while I searched for help on the internet and basiclly forgot about it, after about 30 to 40 minutes I heard the sound xp makes when a usb device is plugged in, I checked odin3 to find a yellow box and a comport listed without unplugging the tab ( I had already set my files -
JP7 full ROM > http://hotfile.com/d..._UBJP3.rar.html
P1 .pit file > http://www.multiupload.com/ZL9HDOGI5V)
and hit start - the files flashed- reset and now the tab is back working running GB.
Everything I read said to set the files in odin3 then then plug in the tab, I set the files but had to wait a while before I got the comport to connect, I think the reason is because the battery was dead( remember the wall charger did not seem to work) and it charged the battery enough to power the tab on. Even after the flash worked it booted into recovery mode, I wiped the cache and did a factory reset( not sure if this was necessary) the tab rebooted into setup mode, I selected english hit next and it asked for a sim card then went dead, I thought great failed again. I started the whole process again (pluged into my laptop) and waited for odin3 to get the yellow box for a comport connect, after about 20 minutes the battery symbol for charging in the off mode appeared, so I plugged into the wall charger and it started to charge. The battery did not have enough power and just turn off. I knew for sure that it had to be bricked but with help from you and patience it worked. I hope this can help someone else. This tab should not be working but everything appears to be back prior to the first post.
Hats off to Gainn and Thank You

Hi JJthebo,
Does this fix apply to the SGT-P1010, originally a U.S. Firmware version but now flashed with the Asian firmware, P1010ZHKF1? Thanks in advance!
