Hi Folks,
I love my 7" tab but I've got a problem with one of the pre-installed apps on it. I live in the UK and my Tablet came with a pre-installed VisitBritain App which has never worked. If I click on it I get a message "The application VisitBritain (process com.visitbritain.widget) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." with the only option "Force Close". Sometimes, when I've not even clicked on this app I get the same message, often several times each day and it interrupts other things I'm doing and sometimes causes the Tablet to hang.

When I look at the list of applications VisitBritain shows up as 14.79MB and as "Installed on device". Unlike for the other downloaded apps, there is no "uninstall" option.

So in summary
1 I don't want it
2 It doesn't work
3 It regularly generates annoying error messages

Hive mind, please, is there anything I can do to get rid of it?

Hi again Bee

Firstly I have Visit Britain as a widget on my P1000, not an app.
It needs GPS to work, so have you checked that it is switched on.
The icon can be deleted by holding on it till it goes grey and then dragging it to the remove box.
I suspect it is one of Samsungs core widgets, like the app NOVA, they are undeletable but can be removed from site.

Hope that helps

Good luck

Blast

Hi Moderator Blast,
Gosh! You're absolutely right! VisitBritain is actually a widget and it requires GPS to work! Thanks for enlightening me.

I know how to remove it from my home pages but that doesn't seem to be enough to stop it repeatedly generating the annoying "Force Close" error messages and that's why I'd ideally like to completely remove it from the P1000. I wish that the app was coded with a better way of handling the error condition of when GPS is not turned on than to have an application crash sometimes followed by a system crash! I get these errors even when I've made no attempt to run the VisitBritain app/widget at all!

Are you aware of a place to report these kind of errors to?

Thanks again

This does sound odd, I HAD a book in the WH Smiths app that caused a force close all the time, so I just got rid of it. I will show this link to Wizz when he gets back later and he might have an idea.

to remove it completely, you would need to root your tab, and then use a root manager program to uninstall it..

There is plenty of advice on how to do this on the forum, but to direct you we need to know exactly what firmware you have..

go into your dialler and type *#1234#
and then post up the results..

The only way you might remove a pre-installed program like Visit Britain, is to "root" your Tab ( look under Galaxy Tab Development for rooting details )

If it's just the error message, or the fact that it crashes for you.......you might want to check if it's been updated by the Developer.

Hi wizz,
My original thought was just to find an update but I can't find it in the Amazon marketplace or anywhere else online! Although the VisitBritain app on the Tab has been discussed several times in the British Press as a great way to promote tourism in Britain, I just can't find any tech support for it!

Tbh, I'd rather not "root" the Tab but I would really like for the error messages to go away.

If you do decide to root it..
you can root your version using this > http://www.addictive...-3-gingerbread/
I have the CPW and used that kernel and I've had a much better experience with the tab since then..
once root is gained, you can then use something like Titanium Backup * Root to uninstall it (make a backup first, and also remember that you have to have USB debugging ticked) and hopefully solve your problem..
If you want to remove the root after, then you can use the CWM app it installs during the root to reflash an original kernel..

It's really not as complicated as it may seem, but as always there are risks and it is possible to make things worse if you do something wrong, and we cant be held responsible for any damage or loss of warranty if you do choose to do it.

So far I've flashed 4 Tabs with this kernel, and had 4 total successes..

Thanks for your advice. I did try this but it doesn't completely solve the problem and the error messages do pop up again.

I'm doing some more testing to see if it will stop the error messages as least until the next time the device is powered up.

...you can also use SystemAppRemover (after rooting) i works perfect and allows you to backup before removing so you can restore it if something goes wrong :)

Or to be safe just freeze the app using a bloat freezer and that way you dont delete any files you may need. Requires root also.
