Hi All, I have been struggling to connect my Galaxy Tab to my laptop for file transfer without a router, yes I dont have a router I am ashamed!!! Anyway I have figured it out using the "Tethering and Hotspot" or "MOBILE AP" function on our tablets. Ad hoc networks might have worked if Android had the ability to detect an adhoc network, believe it or not Android cannot do this despite many requests on the code.google.com website. I have heard of replacing the wpa_supplicant file in the /system/bin/ folder. This has not worked for me I am sure there is someone else it did not work for to.

First thing you need to do is make sure that you have Filexpert installed, you could probably do this with another file manager but it was easiest with Filexpert for me, so get it :-). Your laptop must have an FTP client installed. I use Filezilla, its free baby YEAH!!!!!

Lets get this party started step by step shall we:

1. Activate your wifi tethering in the "/settings/wireless and network" menu, it will show as "MobileAP" if you have Froyo or "Tethering and Hotspot" if you have Gingerbread. Please remember to switch off your data if you would not like to share your internet connection. The point of this is for the Galaxy Tab to host the ad hoc network seeing that it cant detect one(Tsk Tsk).

2. Once this is complete you open Filexpert and click on the "share" tab at bottom of the screen, a menu should appear. The second selection should read "Enable FTP sharing" click this. There should be a new window showing IP addy, username, password and port.

3. Enter the details that showed on your Galaxy Tab screen into Filezilla and then press "quickconnect". You should see green text doing stuff on the screen, this is a good sign it means you are connected.

4. Start transferring files over wifi baby yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!
