Hi all.

Bought myself a wifi only tab a couple of weeks back after having bought a Dell Streak 7 and taking it back after 24 hours cos it crashed on me twice!

Well seems my luck is no better with the Tab but the timescale is a little longer. Firstly I'm in the UK and using Windows Vista and I can not for the life of me get this thing to connect to Kies. Which leaves me assuming that if Gingerbread does ever become available for the Wifi only then I won't be able to get it.

Next 48 hours ago, about 2 weeks after taking ownership, it crashed on me. I had to hold the off button till the home key, search key etc lights flicked and it made a pop sound. I then held the off/on button again to turn it on to find that the home screens had reset to default. All my info, apps, pics, connections were still present. The only thing that had lost info/connection was Calengoo which just needed my account details again. It then became apparent that the home button wasn't working and neither was the search button. I then came on here to search out some answers. having found a couple of threads I tried the solutions like reset default in Samsung home, or clear data, or installing a launcher. Nothing would reactivate the home button, so a hard reset it was.

Guess what it's happened again today and I'm mightily hacked off. No idea what is causing it, in fact I didn't install the last app I had installed before the 1st crash just in case this was the problem.

I know there has been a few others on here with this problem but is it exclusively the wifi version that gets it? The only solution I see right now is to get the 3G version.

One question I definitely need answering, if I do get the 3G will it work with any network? I am on T-Mobile UK and the sim in my phone allows total unlimited internet and so I would want to use this.

Sorry for waffling. If anyone can help with these problems I would be more than grateful. My receipt from PC World gives me until Tuesday to get it in and exchanged or refunded so I'd appreciate some quick replies :-)

Thanks in advance :-)

Kies support for the wifi is non existant. I got it to work after some real messing around, but its usually a waste of energy.
you get the USB driver with kies and that's the only useful bit.

Your tab sounds to me like its about to go pop for good.. dump your data, put it back to standard and get it back quick as faulty before that refund window closes.
You may still be able to return if after that but it gets much more difficult..

As long as you get an unbranded or T-Mobile one then it should work with any sim except a three one..

The p1000 is the more easily updated unit too..
The wifi does not have a firm date for an upgrade yet either..

Thanks for the reply.

Took it back to PC World but not before checking their website for availability on the 3g version and its no longer available. Checked the Carphone warehouse and they only advertise the wifi version to. So on returning the Tab to PC World I decided that I didn't want a direct replacement as I'm not happy with the limitations placed upon the wifi version, which to me seems to me to be living on the back of the reputation created by the 3g version yet the similarities seem to be limited to the fact they live in the same case, beyond that they are very different creatures.

So speaking to the guys at the store about the 3g version they checked the stock at all their stores across the south east and no one had one. So that left me with two choices. Refund and abandon the idea of a Tablet or pay a few quid extra and swap it for something better. So I did the latter and got an Asus Eee Pad Transformer running Honeycomb 3.1 and I'm very very pleased with it......so far. Only trouble with this is it leaves me with a case and car dock for the Tab that I no longer need. Guess Ebay will help me out there.

Anyway, thanks for the response :-)

dont forget to join up at the http://www.androtabs.com forums.. that one is covered there.. ;)

Transformer is good.. sticking it next to the 10.1 does show off how much better the sammy's screen is, but the asus is so fast for most things..

good luck with your new toy.. :D

Thanks I'll certainly try to, and thanks for the link. Will head over there and sign up. Shame I've only been here a short time, seems like quite a good forum.

Oh and I hope I'm not treading on your toes by trying to sell my case, along with the dock, on this forum :-)

Not at all.. it just generates more interest in them when people sell them on.. the amount of people that see it on here is very high, so I'm sure I'll get some orders..lol

This is a good forum, and as you say its a shame, but you gotta get the gear that suits your needs, and it's a good thing to move on when you have to.

See you over there.. ;)

Sorry to bump this thread. But I'm getting this problem about twice a day. It's really cheesing me off having to redo settings and other stuff, then plugging the Tab into a USB to reset the home button functionality and security screen.

Sometimes the condition is caused by the battery being completely discharged, or at random points. There's also a problem where the battery goes from 50% to drained overnight while not being used (blank screen and no running processes).

Is there anyway to fix this either by way of a setting/method or official/unofficial firmware update?

Details:
Model: GT-P1010
Firmware: PDA/KB9 / CSC:KBB (XEU)
Version 2.2.1
Kernal Version 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.XXKB9

we did start on a version of gingerbread for the 1010, but gave up after being unable to get the graphics driver to work properly..
there is another one being worked on at the moment, but after hearing that the 1010 is now on the update list it's probably worth waiting for the official.. I get the feeling it will be done as an RUU rather than a Kies update tho.. the recent issues with kies overloading the servers have shown them that they need more gear before trying a mass update again.

Guess I'd be another Tab user with the same problem.

The other problem I have when it crashes is that it won't use the PIN lock, which is really worrying, Any would be thief could get an unprotected tab... :-(

Guess mine's going back...

Same problem on a WiFi-only here, too.

Lockup only seems to happen when the screen is off,
happens on different battery loading levels, even
when connected to the charger this night ...

Doesn't seem to be related to any additionally
installed software as it even happened after a
full system reset once, before i even had a chance
to restore everything.

Pluging USB into a computer brings up a "Exit
Kies?" dialog after which the home button works
again.

More annoying than the temporarily unfunctional
home button is that this situation always changes
some settings though. After power cycling the tab
it comes back up with GPS on and WiFi off (exactly
the opposite to my usual setup), display timeout
reset from the 30min i use to 30sec, and Silent
Mode not being active anymore ...

Besides being annoying to re-set these settings
every once in a while this makes the device
totally unusable as an alarm clock or as a
calendar with automatic notifications / reminders
as i can't rely on it not just hanging up
silently over night :(

Question is, is this a hardware problem or software problem?

What percentage of GT-P1010's are affected? Is it specific countries/variants?

But most importantly, Has anyone found a permanent fix?

Carl,
P.S. How can I find out my Exact model number? I know it's a GT-P1010 but I don't know the suffix.

Two reset crashes in 3 hours. This device is rapidly becoming unusable!

I'm very much on the verge of wiping the whole thing and returning it.

Looks as if the problem is somehow related to the DHCP problem described in http://steve-shaffer...alaxy-tab-wifi/

"It seems to come from the fact that the phone requests its previous IP address
to the access point, without any discover message, whereas the lease has expired
from the AP point of view ..."

I used to have WLAN active all the time and i've seen crashes every few days, sometimes
several times a day. I've now for a week started to only activate WLAN when i really
need network access and to deactivate it afterwards -> no crashes.

I've now added a fixed address entry for the tab to my WLAN access points DHCP
settings and had no further crashes with WLAN being constantly enabled so far,
lets see if this really a viable workaround ...
