That's very interesting mate - it's good to see hard facts. Also, it seems Samsung aren't the only guys who keep what they are doing under wraps. Are Samsung actually rolling the updates out quicker than their competitors?! the GT-1010 is very new still? Just over a month?!

I have to tell that for someone like myself, who lives in the U.S., out is great to be called "Mate" .

In thinking it over, Samsung's decision to upgrade their older, original Tab's, the 1000 line, should be a message to us that Samsung will be doing firmware upgrades for us GT-1010's in the future.

Maybe Samsung isn't on announcing "Vaporware", like a company like Microshaft is?

For me I don't want releases to be as available before they are stable and support resources are setup for three yet.

The article that showed how few Andriod devices are actually running 2.3x, was an eye opener for me.

At this moment, it appears that 2.x and 2.2x, seem to be the industry standard for Andriod software developers.

I found a fax number for Samsung's U.S. HQ office and I will send them a fax. However, if Samsung's U.S. office oid typical of other U.S. offices, they won't know anything. :-) .

In general, I am enjoying my GT-1010 more and more.

This is a sad sad news. Well i guess that we are stuck on Froyo and there will be nothing moe for us. Never buying Samsung againg - that is for sure.

Edit: I posted a thred in the Xda ( http://forum.xda-dev...57#post13799857 ), asking for some more information or confirmation of the negative answer.

I hope that posting a link to another forum is not against the rules of this one. If so, please excuse me.

° I wouldn't exactly call having the overwhelmingly most popular version of Andriod (65%), and growing is being stuck.
° We do not know if the GT-1010 will get official upgrades to Andriod 2.3x,(only 4% of the market) will our will not occur.

We do know that Samsung is offering a free firmware upgrade to their oldest Tab users, the 1000's.

Personally, I find the Engadget article to be much more about gossip than fact.
Who knows, it could have been written by someone from a cell phone provider.
If you don't think that this type oid thing occurs, your naive.

There are several companies that are very displeased about Samsung's release of a WiFi only version that cost less than 5 or 6 hundred dollars.

When you are referring to "Video Chat", are you specifically referring to Skype?

Try fring. It isn't the greatest (but I have nothing else to compare it to, either) but it works. And it's free.

Worth noting for those like me who are anxiously awaiting an upgrade. First off, as has been mentioned, I would not be shocked to see something come out from the guys at xda. Additionally, if you have not already done so...root your device, and install the one click lag fix. My tab was annoyingly slow before installing this, and after it is downright smooth. To give you an idea of the difference I saw with the 1010 (as many have posted stats for the 1000) I jumped from a quadrant score of 765, to a score of 1890. This coupled with a good ADW launcher theme makes the device much more usable and curbs that pesky buyers remorse.

Additionally, the the gentleman talking about video chat, indeed as mentioned above, fring works well. And it is cross platform so it interfaces with most other devices.

Personally, I am awaiting official Cyanogen support...though that is likely a long ways off. Hope this helps some.

I have to admit that I don't totally understand what "rooting the device is.
What I do know is that it takes away warranty from Samsung.

For while I would l like to upgrade to 2.3x, I don't have a driving, "must" reason to do it at this moment.

I totally agree with you that there will be "unofficial" 2.3x upgrades for the GT-1010.
However, I really have to warn people about taking done of the "technocrats" information as accurate.
I have to admit that I have l have "called out" some of the posters that "outed" them as posting rumors in the form of technology news. Especially about the GT-1010.
Find out if the posters information is from first hand experience our not. Many times tech facts are from what "should or might work", rather than what will work on your particular hardware.

I was going to go down this route of the one click lag fix until reading that despite the quadrant score going up - quite a few tab users have reported apps/processes run slower after? My tab seems slow compared to my i7 imac - but I've just come back from a business trip where I used the tab exclusively & despite skype freezing when a couple of times when running in the background it performed superbly - it has completely replaced the need for me to travel with a laptop.

The OCLF is more of a placebo for most people than an actually useful tool. it only alters the I/O speed, so wont have an effect on how fast most apps load or work if the processor is running at 100% already. It makes backups faster though , so if you have loads of apps and bother to back them up regularly, its worth it just for that. I've not noticed anything running slower than before, so if it is, then it's very marginal.
Other than that I've not found any real world differences that make the tab 'better' than it was. they don't lag like the SGS does anyway, and tbh 2.3.3 is a much better solution to any seeming lag it did have.

I'm going to try an overclocked kernel (@1.4GHz) later today, and i get a feeling it will make a difference with that if i can get it stable. when I get some solid, repeatable results I'll post them up.

You sound like the guy that needs to work with Samsung to release Gingerbread for the P1010!

getting 2.3.3 working, oc'd and stable on the 1010 is the next project..lol.. it should only be a driver issue anyway because of the hardware differences. the chip thats in the 1010 has been pushed a lot faster than the one in the 3g version, so it might be that it will be the better choice once all the shouting is over.

You will be made to wait by them for one main reason. Samsung will delay it while they build the hype up around the 2 new additions to the family.. they want to sell people as many of the new ones as possible, and then throw some crumbs to the older units once they get past that. The better the 1010 is, the less likely people are to buy into the hype surrounding the 8.9 (i dont really see the 10.1 as opposition to the 7.. totally different market imo) and the less profit they will make. the new tabs cost much less to produce, so their margins will be better on those.

This is always overlooked & why I believe after the 2 new tabs are released, some attention will return to the 7" as it does have its own niche in the market place - it's half the size of the ipad.

Gainn,

Fantastic post !!
I am so glad that you discussed the marketing and sales realities for Samsung, which would be the same as for any other company.

A fact that we do know is that Samsung has provided the 2.3.x upgrade for the oldest of their Tabs, The GT-1000.
I would expect that there will be a 2.3x upgrade available for the GT-1010s available as well.

As far as 2.3x goes, isn't there an advantage for the capability of video conferencing ?

From my limited knowledge, it appears that what is the most important is that the GT-1010 has 2.1 or later (and lower than 3.x).
Probably there won't be an official releases allowing 3.x to be installed, which would be no big deal for me.
I want stability, availability of support as well as stable applications available. It appears that the apps for 3.x are just being released.

Thanks,

Jon

I was hoping that after you'd "thrown down the gauntlet" with this rather provocative quip, someone would quickly rally to the iPad's defense & some amusing banter would follow. However it looks like you've won this round - either that or everyone has got deadlines tomorrow and is too busy to be on any forums.

you cant defend the indefensible.. ;)

I honestly thought that would get more of a response.. If only a win over apple was that easy these days.. lol

It is almost the end of the month though, so you might have a point about deadlines..

Given that the GB upgrade is going to come over Kies and given that the WiFi tab is not recognized by Kies - which I discovered yesterday - seems that the GB upgrade to the WiFi tab is going to be problematic
