Device Status: Modified Device software updates no longer possible

After recently acquiring this tablet along with a 64GB Sandisk microSD card, I find that checking for software updates does not work. Even though my tablet is totally stock, not rooted, etc., checking for software updates always produces this message:

"Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available."

Furthermore, checking under Settings -> About Device -> Status -> Device Status, it shows "Custom".

General web searching produced many conversations about this problem, but there were no real solutions. There were just a few workarounds, many of which didn't work for some owners (one idea involved removing the microSD card, others suggested using Safe Mode). Of course none of these tricks ought to be necessary (I own a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and it has NEVER exhibited this characteristic).

I found very little after searching here for comments on this seemingly widespread problem (maybe I just missed it?). Does anyone know whether Samsung has released a fix? For that matter, does anyone known whether Samsung is even aware of it? Any comments would be appreciated....

John

Wherever you bought/acquired your tab from, you will not be able to update your OS while the Device status says Custom. :nea:

To fix this, you will need to flash a STOCK OS for your tab and/or carrier. Then after you have done this, you will be able to update to the most current OS available for your tab. :pardon:

My post in this section was correct, however my signature was out of date. This has been amended (Galaxy Tab Model: 3 10.1,
Galaxy Tab Number: GT-P5210, Android Version: 4.2.2 Jellybean), new and not modified in any way.

Do you have any ideas re the problem I described in my first post? If you research the matter, you will find many owners discussing the same symptoms I am seeing -- this is NOT unique to my unit.

[EDIT] Post moved from 2 10.1 section to 3 10.1 section

Yes, I understand that the "Custom" status presumably inhibits update checking. As far as I can tell the OS is fine, but some aspect of it seems to be buggy as regards the microSD memory card. Other users who report this same problem have found that physically removing (or sometimes just un-mounting) the memory card causes the update checking to work perfectly for as long as the card is not functioning. Then when they re-install (or remount) the card, the update checking reverts to being broken. As far as I can tell, the problem is most prevalent when using 64GB cards. In my case, the removal workaround works; the un-mounting trick does not help -- but of course doing either should not be necessary. I was hoping that someone here might know whether Samsung is seeking a proper solution.
