It's just sad they decided to take out the phone feature of all Galaxy tab in the US. However, with a little bit of work and money, you can get it done.

  • Sign up Skype and pay for Online Number ($6 a month) and a subscription plan ($2.x a month)
  • The Skype from Android Market is locked with making calls using WIFI only but not 3G. Thus, google a hacked Skype .apk to install to the Tab. That will by pass the restriction.. which means, you can make calls with 3G connection.
  • From your phone, use call forward feature (Under settings) to forward all calls to the Online Number you registered with the tab
  • Insert the sim card from your phone to the Galaxy tab. I have unlimited data plan already paid with my phone.

There is still a problem. Skype doesn't work with Bluetooth headset. So you still have to use the Tab as speaker phone, or use the wired headset comes with it.

Hi Bogdi, thanks for the link... I read it over. what's the advantage of involving Google Voice? Upon getting a Skype Online number and subscribe to a calling plan, you can already use the Tab to make and receive calls. Just curious.. is it for the SMS or Voice Mail feature?

Hi
Well the idea involved is to have only one number (Skype & Google Voice) so anyone that calls you through Google voice, the call will be forwarded to Skype Number and ring the phone, and when you make a call, it will display your Google Voice nr.

I didn't try this and I think I should change the name of the guide to "How-to Google Voice and Skype on Galaxy Tab"

I still not quite sure i understand why to add another layer of complexity when getting Skype online number, there is already only one number to use and display as caller id number.

The method i listed above is having my current phone forwarded to the Skype number. Then use my phone sim card in the tab. Since i have unlimited data plan with my phone sim, i can now only carry one device.

Hmm you are right. But there are millions of users that also use Google Voice and lots that use Skype. So you can have both of them in the same time. Did you try Google Voice?

I just tried to add solution on VOIP but I missed the simple solution.

I will add a new tutorial from the steps you listed in the 1st post for Skype only and users can choose after. Thanks :)

Thats cool. I use Google voice for my business so when customers call, it forward to my cell and from the caller Id showing my GV. Number, i know its a customer call but not a personal call... thus i can answer the call greeting by saying my company name.
