Hello All
I would like to find out if it's possible to connect a Galaxy Tab 2 with a 7 inch display (WiFi only model) to the internet with a 3G dongle from one of the cell phone networks?
The only information I can see so far relates to the earlier Galaxy Tab model.
Any help would be very much apprieciated.
Cheers Kevski

A mifi would be the easiest option but they also make portable pocket sized routers. You can mount a USB dongle into them and make that router a mobile wifi hotspot. If you're in a contract forthe dongle this may be cheaper.

Thank you for this idea.
I now know that it's not possible to plug a 3G stick directly int the tablet, but I have alternatives to resolve the issue.
Cheers Kevski.

Hi Kevski,

I too am looking for a cheap solution for internet connection outside my home network, using a dongle if possible. Can you kindly elaborate, what options you have in mind, please. Thanks.

Hello Vijayakrishna
I think that probably the best way to use the cellular network on a tablet or laptop that only has WiFi capability, is to use a MiFi device. They are available free on some contracts from the 3 network. You pay for a data plan only.
I also think that it's possible to get a 3G to WiFi adapter that lets you plug in a regular 3G dongle into it then it acts like a MiFi unit.
If you look on EBay for MOBILE 3G WIFI WIRELESS POCKET ROUTER this should show you what I mean.
I haven't tried either of these options yet but I'm going to give the second one a try in Agee weeks time as I already have a 3G dongle so it may keep the cost down.
The best option by far would be a MiFi unit.
Hope this long winded reply is of some help.
Cheers Kevski.

What is a Tata Photon? I Googled it and didn't see a definite answer, except that it is some kind of modem.

What is it used for?

Looks like a USB modem used for mobile broadband connection. Similar to what Cricket and others offer. Unless the software supports it, probably not. Usually supports only Windows (and Mac?) users.

It won't work unless there are drivers for it.......there obviously are no native ones, or it would work.

So you need to go to Support on the Manufacturers website, and either search or ask if compatible drivers are available.

If they are not....then you cannot use this device with your Tab....

Hello - I'm new on here - looking for advice

I am about to buy a GT-P3110 7 inch TAB 2 Wifi only. I was hoping to use my ZTE MF112 3G modem with it via a USB adapter.
I'm doing it this messy way because my 3G contract still has a long way to run and my Asus Eee netbook has broken.

Hutchinson 3 Telecom in the UK are only offering crapple as an upgrade, and I would rather die before I give the crapple corporation
any business!

I've been told my SIM card could be used in a Galaxy Tab with 3G - is that correct?

Sorry to come over as a cheapskate, but I'm poor. Ideally I'd like to buy a Wifi Tab and use the dongle.
Any thoughts?

Many thanks

Johnny

You will not be able to use your ZTE modem with a Tab, I don't believe there are any drivers available...

You would be able to use your SIM in a combined Wifi/3G Tab, provided a data allowance is included and your ISP settings have been entered correctly.

The only other way you can use 3G on a Wifi only Tab, apart from tethering to a phone, is to use a Mifi..... which are somewhat costly.

So my advice is get a Wifi/3G version of the Tab...

Who is your ISP ? If it's 3 UK, I use their sim successfully in my GT-P1000 Tab, and for what it's worth, a second 3 UK sim in my iPhone 5 !

Both are sim only deals and are VERY reasonable.....

OH thank you Wizz! - I never thought about tethering the tab to my Galaxy S2 phone - duh!

Now I think I might as well get the tablet with 3G built in and use my old SIM card and sell my plug in modem.
Can I make phone calls with the tablet if I do that? I suppose I'll need a headset or Bluetooth will I?

Sorry - I had no idea you could put your own SIM into an iPhone 5. I thought it was so hermetically sealed that you had
to take it back to the iShop to have the screen cleaned. Due to the iForce that prevents you doing this yourself.....

Many thanks
Johnny

In which case..... why would they supply a "key" with every iPhone built to remove the SIM card ? :D

Made in china tablet are able to use external USB 3G modem. Maybe, they have modified FW that allows it. I tested on GT-P3113 and the USB 3G modem failed to be recognized.

Later, APOLOGY added here: Noted somehow my post has made it into a category already addressed for the same question. The answer has already been offered beforehand to another member.

I'm really expecting that the answer is no ------------but I have to ask, since the mobile broadband dongle will fit the Samsung USB connector. Does this mean I can connect to my server when away from home using this? I'm reluctant to try it before I get a clearance, in case I do any messup to the tablet internally by simply trying it out.

I know there is a 3G version, which my tablet is not - however, when I think about it, I can use the mobile broadband dongle on my laptop ........

Did try to phone Samsung moments ago, but got disconnected twice over, so back to the forums and thanks in advance for your advice.

Depending on what carrier and what phone you have it's possible too that you add a tethering plan to your phone. I have a Samsung infuse through at&t and I have tethering, which gives me a data connection anywhere I go.
