I got an alert that an upgrade was available on my 7.7 just a day or two ago, but I didn't have time to devote to it then. I finally got it done this morning and it was a bumpless transfer. I did not have to have it linked to my PC at all. I just let the 7.7 download the new firmware and then let it go through the installation process. I had added a small app prior which enabled the 7.7 screen to stay on rather than going off at 10 minutes and I was able to watch the entire process. After the installation was complete, the 7.7 shut itself off. When I restarted it, Voila! ICS was there. The new system has made more room on the main app screen. Many more icons are present than before. Those of you who have already gotten the ICS update already know all this. I am just wanting to relate my experience. I'm kinda tickled, have to say. Yes, smiles and cheers all around.

Does your Tab still have full phone capability?
What did you do to get notified that the update was available?

"Does your Tab still have full phone capability?" Yes, it does. However, I will qualify this because first try it failed. I use T-Mobile with my Nexus phone and that's a GSM network, so I shut my phone down completely just as I shut my Tab 7.7 down completely and I could transfer the SIM card into my 7.7. I opened the phone app on the 7.7, dialed my work phone number and got an error that the tab wasn't connected to a mobile network. I had to shut off flight mode and also I had to go into settings and deselect "data transfer enabled". I also disconnected from the home wi-fi. (I don't think this last action actually mattered) With data transfer selected off, I could then have the tab search for mobile networks. This is somewhat tricky to find.

Under Settings, on the left side you'll scroll down to "Wireless and networks" and find the orange icon "Data Usage" and a sky blue colored "More" right underneath. Touch that "More" and then things show up on the right side. When you touch "Mobile Networks" it will begin searching cell networks. In my case it showed AT&T and T-Mobile. I clicked on T-Mobile and it connected since my SIM is T-Mobile. After getting assurance that my 7.7 was connected to the cell phone network, I opened the phone app and dialed my work cell phone number and the call went through, no problem.

"What did you do to get notified that the update was available?" On my original home screen, there were small icons at bottom right. If you swipe upward a small subscreen will open giving time, etc. but also notifications. You can touch the "Settings" icon right there and go to settings. Under "Settings" on the left side menu, scroll all the way to the bottom and find "About Device". Touch that and on the right side top, under "About Device" you'll see "Software update". I touched that and it showed me the firmware update was available. We have a good wi-fi network here at home so I wasn't reluctant to do the download. Downloading takes approx. 25 minutes. Installation, probably 10.

As an engineer, I pay close attention to details. The experts already knew these steps. But, it is not necessarily intuitive when you want to wheel around, so at risk of appearing to offer too much details, I think it's better to be precise in this case and I hope you find the update available and experience success as I did.

<Smugness Alert!> <Smugness Alert!>

I'll bet you can easily detect the smugness just oozing from me presently, after getting ICS installed. Your question about phone functionality aroused my curiosity because I remember some saying they'd lost phone functionality after the ICS installation. Not in my case. All is well.

Good luck to you! If I can help further, I will.

I asked the question because I have read multiple places where allowing Samsung to do the update, resulted in the loss of phone function if you were living in a place where they hadn't sold any with the ability.

I gather that you didn't have a SIM card in it when you did the update.

Do you need to have the TAB registered with Samsung?? So far I have not been able to do it. The registration page doesn't have the P6800 as a selection.

I also have pretty good WIFI but I am terrified of losing the phone function.

"I gather that you didn't have a SIM card in it when you did the update." True

"Do you need to have the TAB registered with Samsung?? So far I have not been able to do it. The registration page doesn't have the P6800 as a selection."

I am not sure whether or not it needs to be registered, however, I believe I can assist you on this too, especially since I went through some of the same frustration at getting it registered. If you go to the Samsung website and follow the directions for USA items, you get to that dead end street. But, click on "Support" and on that next page click on "Register now". A new page appears and here is where you begin to ignore the (dead end) drop down menus. On this page, ignore the field for entering your Tab's model number. Just look over on the right side, slightly below, you'll spot "For non-US Products, click here." Click on that and it takes you to the Global Download Center and there (I can sense your relief ahead of time) you'll find the GT-P6800. First select "mobile phone" (even though it's a Tab, 7.7's are a unique tablet compared to others), then select "GSM(3G), and finally in the next drop down menu, scroll down and find GT-P6800 and take it from there. The unlocked GSM/wifi international version 7.7 is technically not purely a US device

I suggest that you remove your SIM card. Make sure your battery is up (I just left my charger hooked up and charging the battery from a low of about 50% while downloading the new firmware) Use the app for keeping your screen from shutting off. I used "Screen Time". Make sure you've got the wifi connection and check for the update. If it's found, begin the download.

Thank you Thank You Thank you.

3rd party electronic device insurance was looking expensive.
I tried going through the "support" screen but I didn't think to pick "phone".

I plan to back-up my business files before I do anything.

First,, Many Thanks to Tallmike00 for posting about the upgrade and the excellent walk through.

I also had a flawless upgrade via wifi through a Cricket Crosswave hotspot. 26 minutes download and about 10 minutes installation and reboot time.

It also appears that my tab was registered automatically with Samsung during the upgrade.

I am using a Straight Talk AT&T SIM card and almost had a heart attack when I tried to make a test call and got a voice message "This is not a valid call." Turned out that when it booted back up it was in "Airplane Mode" and I had to dig into the setting to get it out. Now understand that in the quick setting slider it doesn't say "Airplane mode" anymore. It now says "Mobile Date".

Lots of Icecream goodness.. Looks like there are several APPs I will no longer need since the function is built right into the OS.

Well, off to find out what "Driving Mode" does.

Time for an encore of "Smiles and cheers all around" Success!

One interesting little tidbit: I'm glad that I had selected the wallpaper I had when it was Honeycomb, that being the beautiful blue ocean with islands and sandy beaches in the background. When my 7.7 booted up my wallpaper had not changed. Now, however, with ICS the other wallpapers previously available under Honeycomb are gone. The picture of the ocean and islands got moved into "Gallery". I think for now I'll keep the ocean scene.

OK.. Big frown. The "Driving Mode" is a pale imitation of the 3.2 setting that would read out incoming text messages. All it does it head the name/number of the sender.

Also 3.2 could open the text window up when a text can in. That setting seems to have disapeared also.

You may have to go in and redo some settings. I had no idea what driving mode was so my curiosity was aroused one more time. In fact, I got frustrated because I opened up the 7.7 owner's guide and found no reference to it in the index. So, off to do some Google searching. I found other posts, in which folks talked about steps they had to take to restore the complete functionality. I don't remember the specific steps but you could probably Google a bit and come up with something. There are a multitude of forums where help can be found. Good luck!

Didn't work. I did get to a download page to get KEIS for my computer. The only link on that page to "REGISTER" takes me back where I started..

I have had a "chat" with US tech Support and they gave me a link to the international tech support and an email to them got a reply that I should talk to US tech Ssupport..
