Every time I try and take a picture of my garden out back in my yard the pictures are just grey blocks. I can take plenty of pictures inside, and I can take movies and even flip to the back camera and take pictures outisde but the front camera freaks out! What is going on?! Anybody got any ideas? I would say it is a faulty camera but then why would movies work fine?

Similar problem here, with the installed camera app. Works fine indoors, video and front camera fine outdoors, back camera gives only grey field image outdoors. I've done the reset, I've adjusted exposure bias both directions, no joy.

BUT, I installed a couple other camera apps to test (Camera FV-5 free and Pudding Camera), and both work fine with the back camera outdoors, so it seems to me it's something in the pre-installed app.

Just got this slate this week, and have let it do all its updates.

Hello

I have been using my GT-P3100 for about two months.

Two weeks ago, the camera started saving gray photos, instead of the actual photo that was shot using the standard camera application. Below is the actual JPG file written to SD card.

http://www.codingthe...0902_104308.jpg

The standard camera application appeared to work correctly. Just when after the image had been written to disk did I discover that the image was only 1.5 KB and entirely gray.

I have tried writing the image to the internal sdcard and external sdcard. I have also tried two different external sdcards. The results are identical. I am, therefore, certain that the sdcard is not the problem.

My tab is running stock 4.0.4, which was updated OTA last week. The problem occurred before and after the last OTA update.

However, directly after the OTA update, the camera did work for a week, until I switched from camera to movie camera and recorded a movie. After switching back, the saved photos were again gray.

Restarting the tab sometimes, but not always fixes the problem. It is usually possible to shoot a few photos again, which are correctly written to the sdcard, but then the same gray photo issue always occurs.

When the camera is in this state, it is possible to switch to movie mode and shoot and save a movie correctly.

I have also noticed that when the camera is in this state, the tab changes the following setting from off to on, all on its own:

Sound -> Touch Sounds

This is reproducible.

Sometimes, when starting the standard camera application, the following error is shown, and it is not possible to shoot any photos.

http://www.codingthe...sc/screen01.png

Again, a reboot sometimes fixes the issue.

I have searched this forum and the Internet, but could not find and other person with the problem.

Does my tab have a hardware or firmware defect? Or what can I do to fix the issue?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Jonathan

Hello wizz

Thanks for your response.

I did actually try:

Camera -> Settings -> Reset

already (no change to gray photo state).

However, I have now also tried what you suggested.

I will report back, should the issue occur again.

Up to now, the issue has been intermittent and not easily reproducible, except for the "Touch Sounds" being turned to on.

Do you think the camera is defective? Or is there a bug somewhere?

I can live with a bug, as long, as I know a workaround that works every time.

TIA

Jonathan

I purchased my tab2 7.0 two weeks ago. The first day I was taking pictures. when I went outside and faced the sun somewhat, grey pictures showed up. after messing around with it I had camera working again. went back outside and same thing happened. Called tech support and did the clear cash and even did a system restore. They calledd me back a couple days later after the Android specialist came back from vacation. He said that the cmos was bad,and I would have to send in my tablet to have repaired. 3 weeks was his estimate without my tablet. I have 1 year warranty and my issue is on their records. He said I could wait till the newness wore off and send it in at a later date. I did the same as you, googled for a fix.nothing was found. I was hoping it was a software issue.......I wonder how many units are defective?????Murph

I don't think your camera is defective. It must be a bug--possibly one that came with the software update about a month ago. I say this because I did try out the camera once the weekend I bought my Tab (July 15 to be precise), and the pictures saved correctly. Then I had the software update soon after, but I've not used the camera until yesterday. Yesterday, I tried taking a few pictures, and I got the gray photos when they were saved into storage.

I hope you are correct. My issue was noticed the day I bought it.. of course I flashed the software when I initally started. It is interesting that more people arent posting about this issue. You would think that everyone who updated, would be experiencing simular issues. Im keeping my fingers crossed that a software update will fix. Thanks Murph

It is possible that they are, they just don't know it. The camera on this tab isn't the best to begin with, and couple that with no auto-focus leaves the camera function with much to be desired. So, it could be that many people simply aren't using it in favor of a better discrete camera or using the camera in their phones, so are never seeing the issue.

I know I personally would only be using the front camera for Skype. I don't think I've even tried taking an actual picture with the back camera at all (for the reasons listed above) as my phone's camera is better in every way; resolution, auto-focus, physical usability (smaller and easier to use as a camera), and flash.

Posting in this thread got me curious to see if the problem persisted, and lo and behold...the camera works fine now!

Nothing has changed except a reboot because I power down at night or when I know I won't be using it for an extended period of time. Can't explain what the problem is. Very strange...

Same stuff here. But the problem happens randomly. In my case it worked after i stopped "shutting down unused apps" (clearing RAM). In fact the photos are 1.5 kbps (no picture is being taken). Also it happened that after taking a photo the tablet froze and all i could do was to kill the app (the camera one) and reboot.

But, even though after rebooting randomly the camera was not working again. I noticed that the behavior "improved" (for good) if i stopped clearing the ram of the tablet. When i do it, it says 12 apps shutdown so i thought it was for good but unfortunately seems like it affected it. As far as i know it's not related to available disk space (i have about 1 gb in the internal card and 10 in the external one).

ok... same problem. I bought the Samsung Tab 2 7" student edition. We noticed that after trying to take pictures outside, that the images were all grayed out. If you look at the files in the file browser, you see that they are all only 1kb. as if it isnt saving anything. a reboot sometimes fixes the problem. a different camera program works too and is the temporary solution.

My gut tells me that something broke in the software with the recent upgrade to 4.0.4.

anyone heard anything from Samsung yet about this?

In the meantime, I have also tried pointing the camera directly at the sun. The photo of the sun was correctly captured, but the next one was gray and 1.5 KB.

I pointed Samsung Support to this thread. They wrote back:

We test your phenomenon with a Samsung GT-P3100 with Android 4.0.4. We could not see the gray pictures how you describe.

Please make the full-reset from our last E-Mail to you. If does not work can you send in you Galaxy Tab to our service.

We cannot say anything about new updates at this time. We ask you for your patience.

There is a new firmware version out that may apply to you which may help the camera issue. For those whose next step is to send it in for repair, it's worth a try.

Update Kies and see if it tells you about the new tablet firmware update when you hook up your tab.

Like many, no doubt, I had been googling a while to see if anyone had come across this issue, and finally I see this thread pop up.

I have had my Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0 since they first came out. I also first noticed the camera problem when I was trying to take photos in my backyard about a month or so back. It would show a grey square instead of an image and sometimes the app would even hang. Yet as remarked here, taking video would work fine.

Up until that point I hadn't noticed any problem with the camera. This was also not long after the update to 4.0.4 so I naturally assumed it may have been something to do with the update. Having said that I couldn't rule out the problem wasn't there before, since I hadn't used it in my backyard until now and I did notice someone here said they had the problem before 4.0.4.

To investigate if it was more likely a software rather than a hardware problem, I installed a third party camera app and sure enough it seemed to work fine as was also remarked here on the forum.

I then contacted Samsung live chat. After a while chatting I said I would email some examples to show them what was happening. So I did some tests, using my regular digital camera to take a photo of the same scene as my Samsung for comparison. I noticed it consistently happened every time I took a photo of the Lawn which would explain why I first noticed it taking a photo in the backyard. Video of the Lawn wasn't affected.

A friend also has this exact same model purchased a little while after mine and I had him take a photograph of his lawn to see if his had the same problem and sure enough it did.

After sending the photos to Samsung I was pretty sure they said this was a known problem and that a software update will fix it. Of course two minor software updates later and it still isn't fixed so it does have me a little concerned. I don't want the hassle of sending this to get fixed if in the end it's just buggy software and a replacement does the same!

The fact that the problem only seems to occur on a complex image like a Lawn seems to suggest this is a software bug in the jpeg compressor component of the camera app. I think I also had it occur with another complex scene such as a tree with leaves but I can't be sure and will have to do some more tests.

If it's just a software bug that they don't seem in a hurry to fix, I can live with it as the camera is not that important and it can be worked around, but it would be nice to know one way or the other before the warranty expires!

I did another test today. I notice it always happens if I take a photo of grass or a tree full of leaves. Either I get grey squares or every so often it will just hang and then you cannot use the camera app until you restart. It will display a warning that the camera failed if you do.

I installed a third party app, as I had done once before, by MOBLYNX and took some photos of the same scenes without any problem.

The grass and the tree full of leaves is a complex scene for jpeg compression, so I am guessing there is a threshold reached in which it just cannot cope with this.
