I just got my Tab a couple days ago. I was wondering if it's possible to text to a cell phone. I do not have texting on my phone and it would be nice to be able to use my Tab to do that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Texting is via the 3G network...... so if your Tab doesn't have a 3G sim in it, and can make phone calls..... then, no you can't....

Alternatively, you could connect to your phone via wifi tethering and install a texting app. This should give you texting ability on your tab if it is not 3g capable. While this is a solution, it might be easier to just text directly using your phone, not to mention that using a texting app will use your phone's data plan rather than its SMS feature, and SMS is usually cheaper.

If his/her phone doesn't have texting then I doubt it is tethering capable. I don't have google voice but I believe you can text with those accounts and they are available through wifi. There might be another voip service that does text messaging over a data connection vs a 3G connection. But these options woudn't send the messages from your cell phone number but rather through the voip number.

I was assuming he/she had a smart phone of some kind that is capable of acting as a wi-fi hot spot. Anyway, it was just a suggestion.

Sorry, but I'm totally new to this. My daughter wants to be able to text with a friend that has an Ipod Touch. She uses TextFree, but it won't load onto my Tab. It says it's incompatible. Can you suggest anything?

Use Google Voice with GrooVe IP. See the GrooVe IP docs for details. Texting and voice phone calls for free, using a phone number assigned by Google.

Works fine as long as you have a decent Internet connection.

I have been using Heywire for texting from mine and it works great, as long as you have a WiFi connection you should be just fine. You will have another phone number just for texting but it is unlimited Free texting via WiFi.

You could try using "Line" which is a free texting/calls app. It's available for iOS and Android.

Hope this helps.

Sure you can text to any cellphone with the tablet using your email program. I do it all the time. You just have to know what company the cellphone is with that you're texting. The person you are texting can even reply to you and it will show up in your email program as an email. Just use the appropriate address below in the "To" field of your email. Substituting the x's for the 10 digit phone number you want to send a text to.
