The best advice I found on how to root the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7.0 GT-P3113 is at theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-how-tos/ where you will find How to Root Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, How to Get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ (GT-P3113) Back to Stock, and How to Install ClockworkMod Recovery on the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3100) which will be the same for the GT-P3113.

You need to be able to get back to stock before attempting to root.

I printed out and followed the instructions very carefully with success. Best wishes.

P.S. Before rooting,
Find Your Mobile Device Number, and write it down. To find your Tab's mobile device number (MDN), go to > Settings > About device > Status > Device Status. After you root your tablet, the information will be changed to "modified."

Very helpful article, but does not really address the question: will rooting the Tab delete existing user files? I don't believe it will if done correctly, but would like confirmation from someone who has done it.

If you root the Tab2 successfully, the basic change is that the Tab2 is unlocked. The original system is "modified" so the warranty is voided, and ClockworkMod & perhaps some other softwares are installed. I lost nothing of the original Samsung apps and none of my data.

Of course, if you brick your Tab, you lose everything. Be sure to follow the instructions in How to Get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ (GT-P3113) Back to Stock before trying to root the Tab just in case. Good luck!

OK, thanks, I'll give it some study. Between those couple of pages you cited I can probably figure it out.

My interest in rooting is more academic than pragmatic, so I'm not messing with it until I'm pretty well familiar with the process.

Well,I made the attempt and failed. CWM install went fine and CWM presents as it is supposed to, but on attempting to root I get an error message indicating that the signature verification failed. Any ideas?

Yes. Before I made the attempt to root, I copied down comments from many different sources on the things that could go wrong. One of those addresses your problem exactly. Here is the quote:
"If you follow the instructions it will work. If you get a signature error, you are NOT on CWM. Look at the top of the screen, if do you not see Clockwork Mod you are not using CWM you are using 3e recovery which is the stock. Start over and flash CWM."

A few other points to verify: Kies must be installed on your PC but turned off. Make sure USB Debugging is checked in the Developer Settings. Clockwork uses an external MicroSD card.

Best wishes.

OK, it is 3e. I'll go through the routine again. Can't see anything that might have gone wrong the first time though.

Got it that time.

I went back and looked at the comments under the original unlocker post and found that a new CWM file had been added. The new file worked.

Thanks for the help. Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with my new su privileges.

So far, the best part of being rooted for me has been being able to totally back up my Tab2 7.0 GT-P3113 to the ext-SD card using Rom Manager (as a hedge against unexpected results before making major changes to the Tablet.) Each backup takes about 2GB. I've restored twice using Rom Manager to get back to preferred configurations without a hitch.

Yep I went for Titanium Backup right away. I also plan to remove some bloatware. Beyond that, it's just a learning experience.

Although I read somewhere that it is possible to enable usb charging on rooted Tabs. Something worth looking into.
