I currently do not have a US plug adapter so I can only charge via USB or via wall charger using my Samsung camera charger. When charging via USB, I get the battery charging icon but then it disappears for a minute or so. Is there a charging indicator on this tablet? I don't see any red or green indicator lights.

Same thing happens when I use my Samsung wall charger. I connect the USB data cable to the camera wall charger and connect it to the 7.7 tab. It indicates that it's charging but then after a minute, there is no indications.

Is this normal?

If you Tab is charging, as well as the large battery Icon that you mentioned, you should be able to see a smaller battery. The battery will have a lightening flash in it. Please refer to user manual. If it is not charging you will see a red cross.
If your tab is off, you can bring back the larger icon by using a very light short tap on your power button.

Samsung Galaxy Tab wall charger charges at 2.0 amp, the USB Charge is 0.5 amp, depending on your Samsung Camera Charger, its probably not suitable

best to invest in a Samsung Galaxy Tab Wall Charger :- http://www.amazon.co...7+Mains+Charger

I was charging up the 7.7 via computer USB. Everthing seemed normal and was charging, but when I woke up this morning I saw that it was charged to 72% and then the battery icon had a red "X" on it. I pulled the USB out an re-inserted it and the same thing, 72% and red "X" on battery icon.

I then connected the AC adaptor to it and charged it via the electric socket and things were charging normal with the white "bolt" on the battery.

Is this normal operation?

wow..alot of literature (posts) regarding this issue. Some say do this or do that..faulty chargers..faulty units. It seems kinda odd that it is not recommended to leave this charging overnight..seems like we are past this stage in todays electronic devices. I would assume it would go into some default trickle charge mode. I can't see someone (well, I guess I can if this the only method) waking up in the middle of the night to preserve the 5 hour only charging rule. Are there negative effects if you go beyond 5 hours? ..and why only charge with the tab off? Seems like many quirky things for such an advanced tab.. :/

The basic rules are very simple....

Mains charging with Tab off......Fastest
Mains charging with Tab on.......Fast
USB charging...........................Slow ( Not recommended )

That's it period..

To note from the 7.7 manual (Verizon):

Charging the Battery (PG.10)

"When you connect you device via USB cable, the data connection takes precedence over charging, and the device will only charge when it is turned off."
