ICS has begun it's roll-out to the unlocked international version of the Galaxy Note. Owners should be seeing the update becoming available over the next week via OTA and KIES. The roll-out is, as usual, being done in a staggered fashion.

Happy Days!

I'm in Chicago, United States, and I got a notification on my Note that an update was available.

I immediately tried to get the update but ran in to the "you don't have a SIM card installed" (see comment and question below) (I'm running an unlocked International version and I do not have a carrier--I'm just using mine as an internet (wifi) and multimedia device).

So I went through KIES to get the update. I had a few more stops and starts than usual--KIES, my computer and phone weren't getting along initially. But after about three tries of following on-screen instructions to restart, I am now upgraded to

Android version 4.0.3
Baseband version N7000XXLPT
Build number IML74K.XXLPY

Don't know what is really changed so far, I don't have time to sit down right now to evaluate.

Yay! And now I will consider rooting the phone--wasn't gonna do it before ICS was installed.

(comment/question: as I mentioned, I was used to seeing "you don't have a SIM card installed" whenever I tried to update previously, so I had to use KIES.

After the update to 4.0.3. now when I select "Software update," then "Update," I am no longer asked to insert a SIM card and my phone does appear to go the internet to search. I now receive a "No update available" message.

Does this mean that I will no longer have to rely on KIES and my computer for my updates? (if so, again, YAY!!)

I have just updated the ICS for my Note through 3G this morning in Singapore. Total of 326MB that took about 45 minutes. Do check for update manually now if you live in Singapore and have been waiting eagerly for it.

Yup. I upgraded my Note last night over the air, and everything went well.

ICS seems to have lots of great features, and the Note-specific software looks impressive,
but I am having trouble with battery life. Even running the same set of apps, ICS drains
the power in about half the time that Honeycomb did.

I fancy some the residual Froyo apps are not optimised. Any advice ?

Hi there,

I also have noticed ICS sucking the life out of the battery ! I decided to do a full reset of the Note to see if that helps. Im on my first full day since the reset and it looks to be a bit better but i'll keep an eye on it and report back in a day or two.

Your right, some of the apps won't be optimised for ics but that shouldn't make them less (battery) efficient. I am noticing significant drain when the phone is idle. If you go into "Display" under "settings" you can switch on the battery percentage to be displayed beside the battery indicator which is quite handy for seeing the damage !

Hope your doing well.

Speak soon, Derek

Quick update : battery lasting better now after factory wipe. Also noticed a lot of apps had Push notifications enabled as default with ics, so turned off what i don't need. Battery performance now more in line with Gingerbread.

Thanks for the research, Queeg. I look forward to your conclusions. My battery life is now so poor that I cannot use the Bluetooth link to my hearing aid amplifiers, which makes using the phone very difficult.

Sandra my wife has dug out a couple of suggestions. (She is an iPhone user, but much better than me at using the Net). The first suggestion comes from a Samsung technician, and is the deep-discharge, full-recharge regime. The second claims that lots of apps running under ICS bypass de-activation and drain the battery without showing up anywhere. It suggests various strategies and apps to tackle this.

I attach the information below. I am trying the deep-discharge route. I will report on this later, and also on the other alternatives.

1. Deep discharge text
I'm not having any real battery issues myself, but since quite a few people report it I decided to call Samsung and ask if they will provide a rollback to 2.3.5 or what they could do to alleviate the issue. And the answer was, as a technician had told, to solve the battery issue I should do the following:

1.) Charge the mobile to 100%
2.) Let the device drain battery as "normal" until around 9%
3.) Then open applications that drain battery fast until the phone shuts off
4.) With the phone in off-mode and drained recharge it to 100%, and do not turn on the phone at all during this time
5.) Turn on phone, and the battery life should be back to normal

Seriously, this was the official answer I got from Samsung support technician. Sounds like some old woman's advice, but hey if anyone with battery issue want to try then why not. At any rate it can't hurt

2. General advice re apps

Good luck, people.

Well, the battery soak method works.

I did what it said above, and got 14 hours use with 50% remaining - and that was with Bluetooth on all the time.

A complicating factor was the use of a battery app, Juicedefender Ultimate. However, I had that running before the soak and it did not make much difference to the discharge time.

Juice Defender can switch Bluetooth on and off when something happens - in my case when the phone rings and I need to use my Nokia loop to pass the signal to my hearing aids. This did not work, because the Nokia only stays on when there is a device to talk to. When Juicedefender turns Bluetooth off, the Nokia goes down also, and then does not switch on again when the phone rings.

So I had to leave Bluetooth on all the time - and I still have 50% battery left.

That's a relief.

Glad you got sorted. On a slightly different "Note"! My wife recieved her pebble blue Galaxy S3 on Wednesday, very nice, althought I think the Note is still that bit better. One thing about the ICS upgrade for the Note is that we were told, by Samsung, we would be getting the "Premium Suite" with ICS, but as im sure you have noticed, all we got was S Note - the My Story app and Pop Up video were nowhere to be seen. After playing with the S3 I see that My Story is available ONLY to the S3 and it also has the Pop Up video feature too, so it looks like we were short changed to give the S3 a few unique extras - Pahh !!

Still, leaks of specs for the Note 2 have started to circulate the tech pages this week so looking forward to what the refresh will bring. Incase you havn't seen the storys, spec claims to be 2GHz Dual Core, 5.5 inch screen, 1.5GB RAM, styling like S3. Slim pickings but enought to whet the appetite !
