I'm not living in China or North Korea, but the seat of freedom and democracy..... the UK.
Right from the outset I would like to say I do not condone piracy in any way, but this is not a question of piracy in my eyes, it's more a question of freedom......
I'm talking about the fact that, as of today, access to a website ( The Pirate Bay ) has been blocked by an ISP, Virgin Media, with others to follow......not because they want to, but because they have been forced to by a High Court decision. After they and other major UK ISP's battled strenuously to defeat this action realising the short sightedness of it all.....the judgement came down against them, and Virgin are just the first to comply with the judgement.
This changes nothing, other than the "short end of the wedge" is now here and net freedom has been damaged unnecessarily. If, for instance, someone causes a death by dangerous driving.....the answer is not to try to ban everyone from driving cars, is it ?, and this is what this measure amounts to.
Nevertheless, we must not be too sad because, as every Internet savvy 9 year old child, and above know, that it's impossible to police the Web, especially by politicians acting mistakenly on behalf of Corporate vested interests. If it was, there would be no malware or viruses anywhere in sight.......and we all know that that isn't the case, don't we.
So "Keep calm and carry on", as they say, and I'm sure we won't be turning into North Korea anytime soon.......
