After looking at the threads about people using the 64gb micro SD cards now Ive seen this add
on ebay for a usb hub that allows a external powered hard drive(fat32) to be used with the
10" Tab...
wondering on what peoples thoughts are on using this with the 7.7 ?
quoted from the add..
"SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 10.1 P7500 P7510 8.9 P7310 7300 USB HUB and card readerKIT OTG HOST

Can use for p7310 p7300 P7500 and P7510

3 Ports USB HUB and Card reader

The Hub can connect the external 5V power(The power supply is not included.)

SUPPORT USB flash disk, card reader, mouse.

Support MS. SD. SDHC. MMC. MMC2. RS MMC. UITRA2 SD. EXTREME SD .. EXTREME 3 SD, TF (Micro-SD)

support usb hard disk(The hard disk must have external power)

the disk format must be FAT32, can not read NTFS.
"

http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1497.l2649
whats thoughts here?
what would be the max size hard drive it could read?
has anybody managed to watch movies from a external hard drive?
just wanting to know it can be done before purchasing this and finding out its not true...

O.K. Have purchased the card reader/powered Usb Hub from ebay anyway.
Had a look today and realised my wife has a brand new FAT32 500GB SSD Hard Drive she doesnt use.
When the card reader arrives i will try it out..
will post my findings..
Im after a bigger than 32GB hard drive for movies storage and want it for travelling in a car
or use it in a caravan on holidays etc.
Can power the usb hub by car adapter into 12v lighter socket.

Anyway have been looking at many different forums and seen a guy say he used 750GB no worries.
Will be good if this works i cant wait to find out.

Anybody try any bigger cards than the 64GB? maybe 128GB Thumb drive can work aswell if formatted to FAT32?.
Just looking into my options if this plan fails...

Also seen other options for rooting the devise and changing it to accept the NTFS drive..
I want to keep my warrenty in case i need to send it in for any reason later on.

Yes, please report back.

I am quite interested in this. I would definitely consider a 128GB USB stick.

O.k...IT WORKS!!!!!
Have recieved the USB card reader as mentioned from ebay..
plugged into my tab which has been rooted now.
only mods ive done is add usb mass storage otg app
along with super user app.
The 500GB FAT32 hard drive Works and plays movies..

Now tried a 1TB NTFS drive and also mounted o.k..
as usb mass storage lets you use NTFS so can watch bigger movies...
also mounted both at the same time giving 1.5TB still works..

will post updates about what types of movies eg bluray im able to play..
also have a minor problem with power from car to hard disk but working on it got to check how many volts is coming through my cable.should only be 5V..

Excellent, detailed report...Thanks! :D

I now have a 7.7, also...The USB functionality is the only one remaining to be tested, as I'm pending on a USB OTG connector, still in transit from China (3.64$ !!!).

O.K. have got it working in car now but had a couple of issues at first..
Now bought a regulated digital power adapter with a USB 5v 500mah port on it.
just using this port to supply power to the powered hub/card reader.

Have found stuff that uses power like hard drive needs the power supply but if just using
Micro SD card plugged into the card reader it gets the power from the Tab.

As mentioned before tried the bigger hard drive which was NTFS.
after looking at the power supply for it that plugs into the power at home
its 12v 1.5 amps.I cant get 12v running from my digital supply unless plugged into 24v power.
for moment have made a cable from an old power adappter with same plug as hard drive
checked the polarity and middle terminal is positive and outer part is negative.
have soldered a universal car adapter this polarity to this old power lead and are planning to
use a 1.5 amp glass fuse inside the plug end that goes into the lighter socket.the fuse
that comes standard is 10amp.might hold off plugging it in for a while as will look for a regulated
power adapter that gives true regulated 12v output. This is because due to alternator and revs of vehicle
the volts are up and down alot and seem to run at 14v most of the time as seen on my digital supply
just purchased.im guessing this bigger hard drive should also be regulated at exactley 12v and 1.5 amps
just like the power adapter it come with would be.

Anybody thinking about doing this and using hard drive in car keep this in mind about using regulated
power supply as i had probs getting it to work before i got the digital regulated power supply.
remember to look at your hard drives power requirements. The powered hub works fine from a usb input
which is 5v 500mah(0.5amps)you have to look at your cigaret usb adapter and check it cause ive seen
them range up to 3 amps.dont just plug it in remember this hub ONLY uses 500mah.
will post up some more later when i get this NTFS drive working in the car properly.

Also another note if wanting to do all this the easy way look for a new seagate satelite wireless 500GB hard drive..
It can connect wirelessly using the tabs wifi but doesnt require a internet connection.
the hard drive it self sends the wifi signal to the tab and the tab picks it up and can stream movies no worries.
havent tried this my self yet but think it would be a better option as can charge the tab whilst using it.
the bonus id the hard drive has built in battery and can be charged from car whilst using it aswell.
have read the battery last 5 hours of playback streaming movies.
im going to wait before buying one as just brand new at moment i think and only 500gb availiable.
I want 1TB or 1.5TB when i buy one so can fit all my movies on it.

people say why do you need that much HD space? well as mentioned to fit all my movies on and dont have to sit
infront of computer every few days deleting movies and re syncing new ones and trying to remember what ones ive watched and what i havent. For my work i spend alot of time away from home traveling...

GK

If you just bought the connecter and not the powerd hub/card reader you still have options..
one option is to get a "Y" USB cable that is 2 cables joined together at one end (3 connections).
the joined end plugs into your hard drive and the 2 cables coming from it are both differnt.
one has 4 wires and is a "data cable" end this should go into your OTG port adapter,The other
usb cable end has only 2 wires inside and is a power supply line only and should go to a regualted
power supply that is the same as your hard drive. If you hard drive has no power and only 1 usb port
and draws power from the usb this will not get enough power from the tab. These hard drives do run
at 5V 500mah.The other desktop drives with a seperate power source and usb you would just need a
usb to OTG and a sepertae power adapter. The polatiry and voltage and amps will be writen on the
power supply that come with the hard drive.

anyway hope this helps...

abit more detailed for you..

You will have to use an USB Hub with power supply. All spinning HDD's require much more power than the tablet is supplying. I know it is not cheap, but you can today buy 128GB USB flash drives - they will work well and store also a lot of HD movies!
