I'm looking at getting the 7" Galaxy 7.0 and I need to confirm that the 3.5mm audio jack has both speaker and mic connections in it. I'd like to use a wired headset or retro-style wired handset (a Moshi Moshi Pop Phone) which have the speaker and mic go through the same cable. Thanks.

Don't think so.....it's a stereo audio output only.

The mic is built into the Tab itself, the other alternative is a bluetooth audio device can be used.

So you can't use a wired headset or handset through the jack? Weird because this site says that the Moshi Moshi Pop Phone (which is similar to a regular headset with mic) will work - the Galaxy 7 is in the list of compatible devices:

So I was sure the Galaxy 7 audio jack is audio + mic but just wanted to make sure before spending the $350. But now it looks like it might not be. The attached pic shows the difference between an audio-only plug (3 contacts) and audio+mic (4 contacts).


If anyone has tried using a wired headset or handset through the jack can you tell me if it works? (both audio and mic). Thanks. If it definitely doesn't work, then how would I use a wired headset or handset for video chatting - while muting the Galaxy's own internal speaker and mic?

I just noticed: the Future Shop description says that the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus has "microphone input" - listed separately from the "integrated microphone". But on the manual I don't see a separate mic input. If it does have a mic input (jack) that would work for me - not as good as integrated audio/mic jack, but good enough.

Can anyone confirm if any versions of the 7" Galaxy Tab has a microphone input? Thanks.

Both the original Galaxy Tab (P1000) and the 7.7 (P6800) have an 3.5 mm integrated audio output / microphone input jack. Actually, both devices are shipped with a wired headset that includes a microphone. The headset shipped with the 7.7 even has some buttons to control audio playback. The buttons lack on the headset delivered with the original Tab.

I don't know if the 7.0 Plus also has a microphone integrated in the 3.5 mm.

The 7.7 headset certainly has controls on the 'bulge' in the cable as I have one. I thought that the original 7 also came with a headset having the bulge in the cable. The mic is behind a tiny hole or slot in the case of the 'bulge'.

I asked the question on the 7.7 forum if anyone made a headphone adapter (but got no reply). That is, a cable having a 3.5mm socket at the end of it to take standard 3-pole headphones, but with the 4-pole plug on the other end and with the mic and control switches being part of the socket where the normal headphones would plug in.

This sort of thing is readily available for iPads/Pods and for Nokia smart phones, but neither type is Galaxy Tab compatible.

I don't know if you're handy with a soldering iron, but this worked for me:

The wiring of the Tab's headset socket is:
tip - left earpiece
ring 1 right earpiece
ring 2 - screen common to headphone and microphone
Sleeve - microphone signal

You'll need a 4-pole jack plug (to go in the Tab), a 3-pole jack socket (for the headphones) and a 2-pole jack socket (for the microphone). I used an XLR connector for the microphone, but that depends on which mic you're using.

The tip of the 4-pole jack plug is wired to the tip of the 3-pole jack socket (left headphone)
Ring 1 of the 4-pole jack (the ring nearest the tip) is wired to the ring of the 3-pole jack jocket (right headphone)
Ring 2 of the 4-pole jack is wired to the screen of both the 3-pole and 2-pole jack sockets (the screen for both headphones and microphone)
The screen of the 4-pole jack plug is wired to the tip of the 2-pole jack socket (microphone signal).

Thanks Mike. These connections are the same as for the iPad and different from my Nokia adapter which has its ground on the sleeve, with the mic signal on the second ring.

Did your Tab recognise your home-made adapter correctly? I ask that because usually there's some extra resistors that get short or open circuited when the control switches on the headset are pressed. If the resistors are not the correct value then the phone doesn't see the headset as the correct type.

I have the white in-ear headset that came with my 7.7. I will measure with a multimeter the resistance in all possible switch settings to see if I can ascertain any internal resistor values. I am still amazed that adapters carrying the mic and the volume control switches and call answer/terminate buttons to allow a standard set of headphones to be plugged in are not available. I might even cut the leads of the supplied headset between the 'bulge' and the earpieces and attach a normal 3-pole 3.5mm socket.

It didn't recognise it as such, but it did pause any audio I was playing if I plugged or unplugged the jack - presumably because it was shorting pins as it was pushed in or pulled out.

I measured the switch settings on the white in-ear headset that came with the GT 7.7.

Measured between Ring 3 and sleeve.

No buttons pressed: Measures only the non-linear impedance of the electret mic capsule.
Small button pressed: 51 Ohms.
Volume + button pressed: 195 Ohms.
Volume - button pressed: 443 Ohms.

Well, Using some misc. cables/adapters, I was able to use an external microphone on the Gal.Tab.7

To add to my above post, I'm working on having a single adapter cable made, short & light in weight, that will have a single right-angle plug that splits into two 3.5mm jacks.

One for mic, the other for earphones.

If anyone is interested in such a cale please post here.
